Closed areas: Areas closed for maintenance

Some parts of this park are closed from Tuesday 7 April to Thursday 9 April 2020 while geotechnical testing is undertaken as part of preliminary investigations for the sea wall replacement. The closed areas are:

  • Shark Beach
  • Nielsen Park promenade
  • Signs will be in place around closed areas
  • Updates on the seawall rebuild project will be available on the project webpage.

Walking tracks and visitor areas remain open.

Closed areas: Beach and visitor area closures

The following parts of Sydney Harbour National Park and Kamay Botany Bay National Park are closed until further notice to protect the health and safety of our visitors and staff:

  • Shark Beach, Nielsen Park
  • Milk Beach, Hermit Beach and Queens Beach, Hermitage foreshore precinct
  • Lady Bay Beach, South Head
  • Congwong Beach and Little Congwong Beach, La Perouse 
  • Kurnell Visitor Centre and barbecues, Kurnell

Walking tracks in the park currently remain open. However, visitors are reminded that social distancing and gathering size limits apply.

This situation may change at short notice, changes will be posted here.

North Head Scenic Drive gate closing and opening times are:

  • From 1 October to 31 March each year, the gate is open from 5am to 8.30pm
  • From 1 April to 30 September each year, the gate is open from 6am to 6pm

The toilets at the Commemoration Flat and Cricketers Pitch areas in Kamay Botany Bay National Park will be closed for repairs from Monday 3 February 2020 to Tuesday 31 March 2020.

Toilets will be available at the Visitors Centre, a short walk from the closed buildings. Picnic areas and the surrounds will remain accessible.

NBN works to install optical fibre cable are underway on North Head for the next 2 weeks. There will be some disruption to traffic along North Head Scenic Drive, roads within Quarantine Station and Collins Beach Road while works are underway.

A fox baiting program will take place in Towra Point Nature Reserve from Monday 24 February to Monday 9 March 2020. Areas where baiting is underway will be signposted. The area is a nature reserve and closed to the public. Domestic pets are not permitted.

This program is part of the Little Tern and Pied Oystercatcher Saving our Species program to protect nesting shorebirds. For more information, call the Kurnell Visitor Centre on 02 9668 2000.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is doing 1080 ground baiting using manufactured baits, fresh baits and Canid Pest Ejectors (CPEs) in Sydney Harbour National Park. This includes Chowder Bay and Dobroyd, Bradleys, Georges, Middle and North headlands. North Head includes adjoining land of Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, Australian Institute of Police Management, and Quarantine Station.

The program is continuous and ongoing between 1 February 2020 and 31 July 2020. All baiting locations will be identifiable by signs. Don’t touch baits or ejector devices. Penalties apply for non-compliance.

Please be reminded that domestic pets are not permitted on NPWS estate. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Fox baiting in these reserves is aimed at reducing their impact on threatened species.

Safety alerts: Lower steps on Shark Island Wharf closed

The lower 4 steps of Shark Island Wharf are closed due to a safety hazard. Using these steps for berthing, drop-off and pick-up is prohibited. Access is only possible using the upper stairs.

Small vessels and boats may not be able to berth, particularly at low tide.
