Safety alerts: Unsealed council access roads in variable condition

Council-managed access roads to Mungo National Park are unsealed and in variable condition. Before travelling on any unsealed roads, please check road condition reports for Balranald, Wentworth and Central Darling Shires. Do not travel on closed Council roads.

There are numerous access routes to Mungo National Park and conditions can change quickly due to the weather.

Belah campground is closed until further notice.

This closure remains in place while site protection works are completed on the Mungo Self-guided Drive Tour road.

Ongoing wet weather is further delaying the programmed works.

Sections of the Mungo self-guided drive tour road remain closed. No access is permitted beyond Red Top lookout.

Road works have commenced to undertake cultural site protection and improvements to the road surface. 

These works will take some time to complete and ongoing wet weather is delaying the works program.

A park fire ban is in place in Mungo National Park and remains in place from midnight Monday 10 October 2022 to midnight Friday 31 March 2023. During park fire ban periods, all campfire and solid fuel (wood, heat beads, charcoal, briquettes, hexamine) barbecues and stoves are prohibited. Gas and electric barbecues and cookers are permitted as long as:

  • They're under direct control of an adult
  • The ground within 2m of the barbecue is cleared of all flammable materials
  • There's an adequate supply of water (minimum of a bucket)

If a Total Fire Ban is in place, different rules apply. Contact the local park office before bringing a gas or electric barbecue or cooker.

Billabong walk is inaccessible due to rising floodwaters of the Darling River.

Old Kinchega Homestead Ruins and Old Kinchega Cemetery can be accessed from the carpark. However, flood waters at the halfway point along Billabong walk are preventing access to the whole loop.

Yanga National Park office is currently closed to the public due to COVID-19 restrictions. You can still contact us by phone or email for information.

Visitors can still access the historic Yanga Homestead precinct between 8.30am and 4.30pm daily. A self-guided tour offering exclusive access inside the homestead is available from Balranald Visitor Information Centre or Balranald Caravan Park. Call the visitor information centre on 1800 444 043 for more information.
