Closed areas: Aragunnu campground - tree risk maintenance works

Parts of Aragunnu campground are closed to camping due to tree fall risk. The expected reopening date is Friday 30 October 2020.

The closed areas are signposted. Visitors should be aware that work crews will be undertaking critical hazardous tree assessment and maintenance works throughout the campground from Monday 12 October 2020 and not to enter any areas where works are being undertaken. Reopening will occur once the trees have been assessed and works are completed. Updates will be posted as soon as possible.

Closed areas: Middle Beach campground - tree risk maintenance works

Middle Beach campground is closed to camping. The expected reopening date is Friday 30 October 2020.

The closure is due to tree fall risk following recent months of wet weather leading to the flooding and water logging of the campground. The closed areas are signposted. Visitors should be aware that work crews will be undertaking critical hazardous tree assessment and maintenance works throughout the campground from Monday 12 October 2020 and not to enter any areas where works are being undertaken.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a baiting program using ground baits containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes. The program will be conducted between Wednesday 14 October 2020 and Wednesday 14 April 2021 in the Kangaroo Valley, Budgong and Illaroo areas.

All baiting locations will be identifiable by signs.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Penalties apply for non-compliance. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is conducting an ongoing 1080 ground baiting operation from Wednesday 14 October 2020 to Wednesday 14 April 2021 to reduce the impacts on threatened species.

The operation will target foxes and wild dogs in the Carrington Falls, Knights Hill and Barren Grounds areas. Baits have been placed on NPWS estate, private properties and Crown road reserves with permissions. 

There will be 1080 baiting signs at the entrance to baiting areas. Don’t touch baits or ejector devices. Some baits may be buried.

1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) is lethal to pets (including domestic dogs and cats) and working dogs. In the event of accidental poisoning, seek immediate veterinary assistance. Domestic pets, including dogs and cats are not permitted in national parks or reserves. Restrain working and assistance dogs to ensure they don’t enter the baiting areas. If you need your dogs to work in the baiting area outside of national park estate, we suggest muzzling them.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is disposing of used 1080 baits and baiting products in an approved disposal pit on NPWS estate within the Fitzroy Falls area.

Burial of used baits and products will occur from Wednesday 14 October 2020 to Wednesday 14 April 2021. All bait material in the pit will be buried under at least 500mm of soil, clear of waterways so as not to cause pollution of waterways, in accordance with Pesticide Control Order (1080 bait products) 2019.

There will be 1080 baiting signs at the entrance to the disposal pit site.

1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) is lethal to pets (including domestic dogs and cats) and working dogs. In the event of accidental poisoning, seek immediate veterinary assistance. Domestic pets, including dogs and cats are not permitted in national parks or reserves. Restrain working and assistance dogs to ensure they don’t enter the baiting areas. If you need your dogs to work in the baiting area outside of national park estate, we suggest muzzling them.

The program will be ongoing and continuous from Friday 16 October to Thursday 31 December 2020. The baited reserves include:

Most of Morton National Park remains closed due to bushfire damage and to protect the safety of our visitors.

However, the following areas are now open:

    • Ettrema Wilderness walks starting from Yalwal
    • Old Burrier fire trail

An overnight walk in Morton National Park wilderness areas requires a trip intention form at this time, as per our COVID-19 update.

Most of Morton National Park has been bushfire-affected. Caution should be taken as risks may still be present.

Light to Light walk is partially closed due to hazardous conditions and bushfire damage.

  • The Bittangabee to Green Cape section of the walk is open
  • The Saltwater to Bittangabee section of the walk is open
  • The Boyds Tower to Saltwater section is scheduled to reopen on Sunday 1 November 2020 

Hegarty's bush campground will remain closed for camping for the foreseeable future to allow for site rehabilitation.

Large sections of the boardwalk will need to be replaced. Please take extra care when undertaking this walk.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting baiting using approved meat baits containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes.

The program will be from Wednesday 7 October to Wednesday 18 November 2020 in Upper Nepean State Conservation Area (in the vicinity of Diamond Fields Road, Mittagong), Joadja Nature Reserve and Bangadilly National Park.

This program is part of a joint control program being coordinated by NPWS in conjunction with the South East Local Land Services to assist with the ongoing management of wild dog impacts on production properties.

Domestic animals may be affected. Poison 1080 is lethal to cats and dogs. Residents should restrain domestic animals and ensure they do not enter the baiting location during poisoning operations. It is recommended that working dogs are muzzled if they are required to work near the baiting location during or after poisoning operations. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance. Baits may remain active after the dates specified.

Warning signs will be displayed to notify the public about the poison program. Visitors are reminded not to handle or disturb any baits.

The access trail from the 4th carpark at Wattamolla to The Coast track is currently being upgraded. The upgrade works are happening from Tuesday 4 August to late October 2020.

Although the existing trail from the top carpark to The Coast track is closed during this period, The Coast track will remain open. Visitor access to and from Wattamolla to The Coast track will be via Providential Point. Please follow the signs advising the alternate route.

Other planned events: Jamberoo Mountain Road - Sections closed

Public road closures are in place on Jamberoo Mountain Road from Knights Hill Road to Misty Lane due to a land slide on Jamberoo Mountain. This affects all through traffic and also access to Barren Grounds Nature Reserve and parts of Budderoo National Park.

Kiama Municipal Council have indicated this closure may be in place for up to 6 months.  Please check NSW Live Traffic or Kiama Municipal Council for updates.

All parks will remain open and can only be accessed from Jamberoo Mountain Road via Illawarra Highway. You can drive around the side of the 'Residents Only' barrier at Knight Hill Road intersection to access the parks.There maybe unmarked road hazards including fallen trees.

Please drive safely and follow  road signsand directions of council or NPWS staff.

Safety alerts: Diversion on Mount Keira Ring track

The staircase on the western side of Mount Keira Road at the junction of Mount Keira Road and Queen Elizabeth Drive has been closed off for repairs. Please follow the relevant signage for a slight detour to the ring track at the crossing of Queen Elizabeth Drive.

If completing the loop in a clockwise direction: head north uphill of the closed staircase for roughly 50m until you come to an opening by the road. Take care crossing the road at this point and re-join the track at the usual entry point to the eastern side of the loop.

If completing the loop in an anticlockwise direction: when you get to Queen Elizabeth Drive crossing head north for roughly 50m from the point of entry to the western side of the loop. Re-join the track at this point.

Closed areas: Access to Figure 8 Pools – Burgh Ridge track closed Mondays to Thursdays

Burgh Ridge track between Garawarra Farm and the Royal Coast track is closed during the week for major upgrade works from Saturday 1 August to Tuesday 1 December 2020:

  • The track is closed Monday to Thursday
  • The track is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday

This closure will impact people visiting Figure 8 Pools. Visitors can access Figure 8 Pools from Garie Beach and Otford lookout along the Royal coast.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting a ground baiting program for foxes using fresh meat, manufactured baits and CPEs containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate). The program will be ongoing and continuous from July 1,2020 to December 31st, 2020. The baited reserves include:

  • South East Forests National Park
  • Eurobodalla National Park
  • Mimosa Rocks National Park
  • Bournda National Park and Nature Reserve
  • Ben Boyd National Park
  • Gulaga National Park

There will be signs at entrance and exits to the baiting locations.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Some areas of Royal National Park will be closed to the public between sunset and sunrise to enable pest animal management programs to be carried out.

These closures will be signposted at the entry points to the closed areas.

The affected areas include:

  • Audley precinct and Lady Carrington Drive
  • Artillery Hill and Warumbul Road
  • Bonnie Vale campground and picnic area.
  • Asset protection zones adjacent to Maianbar, Bundeena and East Heathcote
  • Wattamolla and Garie picnic areas
  • North Era campground
  • Garrawarra Farm

Visitors who have approved bookings to camp can still access their campsites during these times.

Safety alerts: No campfires or solid fuel fires at Middle Beach campground

For visitor safety, campfires and solid fuel fires (wood, heat beads, charcoal, briquettes, hexamite) are not permitted at Middle Beach campground or picnic area.

The use of gas-fired, liquid fuel and electrical appliances will be permitted where:

  • The appliance is under the direct control of an adult
  • The appliance is placed or located in an area where there is no combustible material within 2m
  • There is an adequate water supply to extinguish fire, should it start next to the appliances.
  • It is not a Total Fire Ban

Access to Macquarie Rivulet from Mount Murray, at the top of Macquarie Pass is not permitted. If you access the rivulet from the top of the escarpment, you will be trespassing on private property and this action may result in police involvement.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is conducting a 1080 ground baiting operation targeting foxes from Monday 4 May to Monday 30 November 2020. This is to reduce the impacts on threatened shorebird species, especially during the breeding season. Baits are buried and tethered.

The operation will happen in Seven Mile Beach National Park and Comerong Island Nature Reserve. Baits are placed only on NPWS estate and more than 150m from habitation.

1080 baiting signs are located at the entrance to the national park and reserve and near baiting areas. Do not touch the baits or tethers.

1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) is lethal to pets (including domestic dogs and cats). In the event of accidental poisoning, seek immediate veterinary assistance. Domestic pets, including dogs and cats, are not permitted in national parks or nature reserves. Restrain assistance dogs to ensure they do not enter the baiting areas.

Safety alerts: Bingie Dreaming track - closed and open coastal lakes and lagoons

Bingie Dreaming track crosses openings to several Intermittently Closed and Open Coastal Lakes and Lagoons (ICOLLS). Openings of these lakes and lagoons are often unpredictable and can be quite dramatic. Please be aware that although lakes are usually only open for short periods (weeks), they can be impassable when open.

The Coila Lake opening is at the southern end of Bingie Dreaming track. Please check if this lake is open before you set out. If the opening is impassable, you won't be able to access the village of Tuross to complete the walk.

All access to the base of Belmore Falls from Hindmarsh and Belmore Falls lookout and picnic area is permanently closed due to safety risks. Access is also closed from the causeway to the top of the falls. These access points are prohibited to visitors and penalties apply for non-compliance. Safety alerts: Some fire trails not suitable for trailer access

Within Deua National Park some trails are not suitable for trailer access. National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has had advisory signs in place for some time to encourage people towing 4WD trailers to avoid some of the steeper, harder-to-maintain trails in Deua National Park. However, due to ongoing damage to trails as a result of continued inappropriate use of 4WDs towing trailers on these signposted trails, NPWS is now prohibiting the use of trailers on the following trails in Deua National Park:

  • Dampier Mountain trail
  • Oulla Creek trail
  • Minuma Range trail
  • Merricumbene trail
  • Mongamula trail
  • Dry Creek trail

It is now an offence to tow trailers on these trails. The penalty for towing trailers on these trails is a $300 penalty infringement notice, or higher if the matter is taken to court. By keeping trailers away from these identified trails, you reduce the safety risk to yourself and others, reduce damage to the park environment and your assets and reduce park maintenance costs, a benefit to everyone. Trailer access to Bendethera is still available from Moruya via Little Sugarloaf Road and Bendethera trail. Safety alerts: Audley precinct in wet weather

Access across the Audley Weir may be closed due to river flooding during times of wet weather. During wet weather, NPWS advise park visitors to visit Live Traffic NSW to ascertain the status of the Weir crossing before commencing their travel to the park. During times of closure, access to Bundeena, Maianbar residential areas, Royal National Park Visitor Centre, including the Audley Dance hall and cafe, is via McKell Ave Waterfall.

Picnic Point campground is closed to camping from Monday 9 November to Friday 13 November 2020 inclusive. Visitors should be aware that work crews will be undertaking critical hazardous tree assessment and maintenance works throughout the campground and not to enter any areas where works are being undertaken.

Reopening will occur once the trees have been assessed and works are completed. The expected reopening date is Saturday 14 November 2020. Updates will be posted as soon as possible.
