Other planned events: 1080 fox baiting program underway

A 1080 fox baiting program is underway at Towra Point Nature Reserve, and will finish on Saturday 31 March 2019.

The program is part of the NPWS FoxTap program, and is designed to control foxes to assist in recovery of little terns and pied oystercatchers. 

1080 poison can affect non-target species like domestic dogs and cats.

Other planned events: Summer traffic in Royal National Park

The Royal National Park is busy throughout January 2019. As car parks become full at Wattamolla Beach, Garie Beach, Audley and Bonnie Vale, temporary road closures may be implemented. When parking is full, traffic will only be permitted to travel through the park. Traffic controllers and NSW Police will be on-site managing access.

Other planned events: Herbicide application - aquatic weeds

A weed spraying operation will be undertaken on the Hacking River in Audley NSW upstream of Audley weir to Jesey Springs. The operation is targeting Senegal tea and Ludwigia weeds with herbicides metsulfuron-methyl and glyphosate. Herbicide application trials for yellow water poppy will also be undertaken using various herbicides. Closed areas: Walking tracks upgrade

Access to walking tracks between Cape Banks and Henry Head will be affected from September 2018 to March 2019 due to track upgrades.

  • Cape Banks bridge to island will be closed from Monday 4 February 2019 to Wednesday 6 February 2019 for the construction of pathway and concreting.
  • The track from Cape Banks to Henry Head is closed.
  • Cape Banks walking track is open, but there is no access to Henry Head. Expect some delays due to construction.
  • Henry Head walking track is open to Cruwee Beach. The track is closed from Cruwee Beach to Cape Banks.

Safety alerts: Malabar Headland Rifle Range operation schedule

1. For public safety, the eastern section of Malabar Headland National Park is closed during ANZAC Rifle Range operations.

These closures may occur with little or no notice.

2. Do not enter the eastern section of the park (including Boora Point walking track) when:

  • Red flags are flying above the range
  • There are warning signs at the park's entry points (South Maroubra Beach and Fishermans Road carpark)
  • Park entry gates are closed.

3. When is the eastern section of the park closed?

  • Every Saturday
  • 1st Sunday of the month. However, Sunday 3 March 2019 is Clean Up Australia Day, and there will be no shooting on that day.
  • 3rd Sunday of the month. However, Sunday 21 April 2019 is Easter Sunday, and there will be no shooting on that day.
  • Thursday 25 April 2019 (Anzac day)

These closures apply to the eastern section of the park only (Boora Point walking track).

The western section of the park (Western Escarpment walking track) remains open.

The range operation schedule is provided by the NSW Rifle Association.

Safety alerts: Audley precinct in wet weather

Access across the Audley Weir may be closed due to river flooding during times of wet weather. During wet weather, NPWS advise park visitors to visit Live Traffic NSW to ascertain the status of the Weir crossing before commencing their travel to the park. During times of closure, access to Bundeena, Maianbar residential areas, Royal National Park Visitor Centre, including the Audley Dance hall and cafe, is via McKell Ave Waterfall.
