Safety alerts: Take care on tracks and surfaces

Erosion and surface damage has occurred on walking tracks, road surfaces within national parks of the Hastings Macleay Area following significant and prolonged rainfall events. Remediation works are scheduled as weather permits.

Closed areas: Walking tracks closed due to flooding

The following walking tracks are closed from midnight, Thursday 22 September to 10am, Monday 26 September 2022 due to widespread rain causing flooding:

  • Threlfall walking track
  • Salisbury walking track
  • Wollomombi walking track

Remember, it’s never safe to drive, ride or walk through flood waters, so you’ll need to reschedule your visit and avoid travel through areas in this park. NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting an aerial baiting program in this park from Saturday 8 October to Friday 14 October 2022.

The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise the impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Oxley Highway between Port Macquarie and Walcha is subject to part closures on weekdays until 16 December 2022.

Safety alerts: Access to Bird Tree Picnic Area - 4WD only

Access to Bird Tree Picnic Area is currently affected by a landslip on Grey Gum Ridge Road, and wet conditions due to ongoing recent rainfall. It is not suitable for 2WD access. 

4WDs can access Bird Tree Picnic Area by using Haydons Road off the Pacific Highway, which then joins Stoney Creek Trail and Grey Gum Ridge Road to access the picnic area from the north. There is no access on Grey Gum Ridge Road south of Bird Tree Picnic Area (towards the towers) due to a significant land slip.

Meat baits and canid pest ejectors (CPE’S) containing 1080 sodium fluoroacetate poison are laid in this park.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise the impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

Access to Yessabah Nature Reserve is permanently closed to unauthorised personnel. The former quarry area has limestone rock faces that are unstable and prone to rock fall. Other areas of the reserve are geologically unstable.
