Awaba Bay Foreshore Walk in Lake Macquarie State Conservation Area will be closed from Tuesday 11 May 2021 until further notice between the Northern Boundary Fire Trail and Alexander's Picnic Area due to a landslip.

Closed areas: Dudley Beach carpark closure

Dudley Beach carpark will be closed to pedestrians and vehicles from Monday 10 May to August 2021 to ensure visitor safety.

NPWS is renewing and undertaking minor upgrades to improve accessibility and visitor amenity.

Dudley Beach will remain accessible for pedestrians via the Bombala Street, Goulburn Street, Debs Parade and Banksia Street walking tracks.

The main works at Dudley Beach carpark will include:

  • The whole carpark area will be re-surfaced and lines marked 
  • New viewing platforms
  • Picnic facilities will be upgraded with construction of new shelter structures
  • Southern beach entry will be resealed and will have a new board and chain pedestrian walkway installed
  • New signage across the site.

Safety alerts: Notice of pest management program

A pest management program using meat baits containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison will be undertaken between Saturday 1 May to Sunday 31 October 2021. 

The program will target the northern side of the park, including some private properties bordering the Congewai Valley. Meat baits will also be delivered by helicopter on one day between the Monday 10 May and Friday 14 May 2021.

All baiting locations will be identified by signs.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Closed areas: NPWS Prescribed Burn - Jilliby SCA -Hallards Road Central Mangrove

The south-western section of this park is closed from Wednesday 28 April until Friday 20 April 2021 for a hazard reduction burn. This section is north and east of Hallards Road - Central Mangrove. Do not enter the closed area.

Penalties apply for non-compliance. RFS and NPWS crews will be in attendance over the 3 days. Neighbours should close windows, remove washing from clothes lines and secure pets.

Closed areas: Temporary closures to road network

NPWS is conducting maintenance works and resealing on the road network in Munmorah State Conservation Area from Saturday 1 May to early June 2021.

There will be periods of restricted access or temporary road closures. Minor traffic delays can be expected.

NPWS is scheduling and sequencing works to minimise impact to visitors, including access to Frazer campground and Freemans campground.

Snapper Point access road will be closed to general public access from Monday 10 May to Friday 14 May 2021.

Frazer campground access will be closed to the general public on Wednesday 12 May 2021.

Campgrounds and some access roads in this park are closed due to a severe weather event. This is due to weather conditions causing track and road damage, land slips and tree falls across many areas. 

NPWS is conducting condition assessments to determine the extent of the damage and to rectify safety issues. For your safety, please avoid these areas until further notice.

Closed areas: The Coast walking track - temporary closure

Sections of the Wyrrabalong Coast walk between Bateau Bay carpark and Crackneck lookout will be temporarily closed from Monday 26 April 2021 to mid-June 2021 due to maintenance works. In order to minimise disruption, detours will be in place around sections closed for construction via the local road network.

Track upgrades will improve visitor safety and experiences along the walking track.

The proposed scope of works includes:

  • Improvement and replacement of track surfaces and structures
  • Installation of drainage structures to manage erosion and stormwater flows entering the reserve
  • Installation of bicycle prevention structures to improve visitor safety and manage multi use of the visitor precinct.

Access to Crackneck lookout and the southern section of the coast track from Crackneck lookout carpark to Cromarty Hill are unaffected by the temporary closure.

The NPWS is awaiting a geo-technical report on the landslide to ensure visitor safety. The entry gate is currently locked and no visitor access is permitted.

Some areas in Watagans National Park are temporarily closed from Wednesday 23 March 2021.

  • Gap Creek Falls walking track is closed due to fallen trees, water over the track and slippery conditions.

Safety alerts: Road access in Jilliby State Conservation Area

All roads in Jilliby State Conservation Area are unsealed, and not readily accessible by 2WD vehicles. 4WD vehicles should be used at all times. Safety alerts: 1080 fox and wild dog program underway

1080 poison feral animal baiting restarts on selected roads in Watagans National Park from Tuesday 17 November 2020 to Wednesday 30 June 2021. The baiting is also occurring on some adjacent properties with the permission of land-owners. Roads affected include:

  • Rope Road
  • Bowmans Road and part Harris fire trail
  • Ingles Road
  • Carrolls Road
  • Georges Road
  • Turners Road

Visitors and neighbours are reminded that domestic animals are not permitted in the national park at any time. 1080 poison is toxic to domestic cats and dogs. Seek urgent veterinary care if you suspect your animal has taken a bait.

The baiting is targeting foxes and wild dogs which are a major predator of native wildlife including brush-tailed rock wallabies.

Safety alerts: Watagan Road - not suitable for 2WD vehicles (Cessnock Council section)

Watagan Road from the cattle grid at the southern end of Heaton Road south, uphill to the second cattle grid at the Watagans National Park boundary, is currently not suitable for 2WD vehicles. The road is rough and steep in sections because of erosion caused by rain and vehicle traffic. Take care and drive safely.

Closed areas: Parts of Sugarloaf State Conservation Area closed

Parts of Sugarloaf State Conservation Area are closed for approved underground mining operations. The affected areas (see map) have been closed to protect visitor safety, because they're subject to subsidence and remediation activities from the mining operations.

The Great North Walk remains open. An update will be provided should this situation change.

If you're visiting the park, please be aware of subsidence and pollution incidents that took place in 2013, which were greater than what was expected from normal mining operations. These included a cliff fall in the north, and a subsidence and grout leak incident in the central part of Sugarloaf State Conservation Area. 

If you're planning to visit the park during this time, please stay on formed tracks and trails and observe all barriers, warning signs and safety messages. Click Creek fire trail is closed due to extensive storm damage. The trail will remain closed until maintenance works can be completed. Slippery Rock Road is closed due to eroded surfaces making conditions unsafe. The road will reopen, subject to consent conditions once maintenance work is completed.

The Morisset section of Lake Macquarie State Conservation Area is closed from Thursday 20 December 2019. There is now no public access to the following areas:

  • The  Morisset Hospital site
  • Lake Macquarie State Conservation Area foreshore
  • Morisset picnic area.

Alternative picnic areas are located in the Lake Macquarie Council area in and around the Morisset and Bonnells Bay foreshores. There is no public access to view the kangaroos that frequent the hospital site.
