Some parts of this park are closed for hazard reduction burning from Thursday 29 May to Friday 7 June 2024. The closed areas are:

  • Salmons Trail
  • River Trail
  • Main Trail
  • Horse Stealers Trail

Access to the Gwydir River through the park will be closed to the public.

Closed parks: Arakoola NR closed due to aerial pest control operation

Arakoola Nature Reserve will be closed from Saturday 25 May to Friday 31 May 2024 for an aerial pest control operation.

This aerial pest control operation will be conducted as part of an ongoing program to protect the ecological values of Arakoola Nature Reserve and reduce impacts of feral vertebrate species on reserve and surrounding private property.

National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will commence a 1080 ground and aerial baiting program on the 1st April to 30th June 2024 on the following reserves:

The operations will use meat baits containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes. Signs will be placed at the entry to all the baiting locations. Domestic pets are not permitted in NPWS managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting locations. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.
