Fire bans: Park fire ban

A solid fuel fire ban is in place in this park from Monday 10 December, 2018 to Sunday 31 March, 2019, unless otherwise extended.  During park fire ban periods, all campfire and solid fuel (wood, heat beads, charcoal, briquettes, hexamite) barbecues and stoves are prohibited. Gas and electric barbecues and cookers are permitted as long as:

  • They're under direct control of an adult
  • The ground within 2m of the barbecue is cleared of all flammable materials
  • There's an adequate supply of water (minimum of a bucket)

If a Total Fire Ban is in place, please contact the local park office before using a gas and or electric barbecue or cooker.

Closed areas: Robertson's lookout and part of The Jumpers track closed

Robertson's lookout and the Robertson's lookout end of The Jumpers track are closed for urgent maintenance works. This closure will remain in place unless otherwise extended or removed.

Closed areas: Wattamolla picnic area closed

Wattamolla picnic area will be closed on Wednesday 20 February 2019, 6am to 5pm, due to helicopter operations. There will be no access to Wattamolla beach or lagoon. Walkers on the Royal Coast Track will be guided through the area by NPWS staff. Please follow their instructions.

Other planned events: Summer traffic in Royal National Park

The Royal National Park is busy throughout January 2019. As car parks become full at Wattamolla Beach, Garie Beach, Audley and Bonnie Vale, temporary road closures may be implemented. When parking is full, traffic will only be permitted to travel through the park. Traffic controllers and NSW Police will be on-site managing access.

Closed areas: Mount Pleasant walking track

Mount Pleasant walking track at Mount Keira will be closed to public access from Monday 21 January, 2019 to Friday 1 March, 2019 due to construction work by Wollongong City Council. NPWS apologises for any inconvenience caused.

Other planned events: Herbicide application - aquatic weeds

A weed spraying operation will be undertaken on the Hacking River in Audley NSW upstream of Audley weir to Jesey Springs. The operation is targeting Senegal tea and Ludwigia weeds with herbicides metsulfuron-methyl and glyphosate. Herbicide application trials for yellow water poppy will also be undertaken using various herbicides. Closed areas: Areas closed due to rock falls

Some areas of this park are closed to public access due to rock fall hazards. Closed areas are: 

  • The northern section of the Mt Keira Ring track that extends west from the Mt Pleasant track to the stairs leading up to Queen Elizabeth Drive
  • All areas above Mt Keira Ring track to Mt Keira summit, except for the Dave Walsh track and the rock-climbing area on the western face of Mt Keira.

Safety alerts: Audley precinct in wet weather

Access across the Audley Weir may be closed due to river flooding during times of wet weather. During wet weather, NPWS advise park visitors to visit Live Traffic NSW to ascertain the status of the Weir crossing before commencing their travel to the park. During times of closure, access to Bundeena, Maianbar residential areas, Royal National Park Visitor Centre, including the Audley Dance hall and cafe, is via McKell Ave Waterfall.
