Closed parks: Parks closed due to flooding - Coffs Area

Most national parks and reserves in the Coffs Coast area are closed until at least Friday 29 July 2022 due to widespread flooding and severe weather as risk assessments and repairs are undertaken. 

Access to hard-roofed accommodation on-park remain open.

Access to campgrounds at Doon Goonge in Chaelundi National Park and Thungutti campgrounds in New England National Park is open.

As parks, roads and other facilities are assessed as safe, they will be reopened. This closure may be extended and any extension will be posted as soon as possible.

Remember, it’s never safe to drive, ride or walk through flood waters. Roads into and throughout the park are / may also be closed. Check Live Traffic NSW for up-to-date information and contact the local park office.

For assistance during severe weather visit the NSW SES website. In life-threatening situations call emergency services on Triple Zero (000).

This park is closed from Monday 2 May until Tuesday 2 August 2022, due to widespread damage following rainfall and flooding in early March 2022.

Many creek crossings, roads and trails are closed and impassable due to a severe rainfall event causing dangerous conditions.

Access to Doon Goonge campground is best from the north or south via Chaelundi Road and then Quartz Road.

It is also not possible from the east on Chandler Creek trail, due to a major washout on Chandler Creek.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a baiting program in Bagul Waajaarr Nature Reserve between Monday 11 April and Thursday 29 September 2022.

The program will use manufactured meat baits containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs. 

The baiting area will be identifiable by signs.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Aerial Baiting is scheduled for 06/06/2022 to 10/06/2022

 

The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Safety alerts: Be cautious on tracks and surfaces

Erosion and surface damages are present on walking tracks, road surfaces and managed areas across national parks of the Hastings Macleay Area following significant and prolonged rainfall events. Remediation works are scheduled as weather permits. Please take care and be aware of the conditions when visiting these national parks.

NPWS is undertaking upgrades to Eagles Nest walking track and the two Point lookout platforms. Works are scheduled to commence on Monday 2 May 2022 and are planned for completion by October 2022, weather permitting.

During construction, the following areas will be closed for public safety:

  • Eagles Nest walking track
  • Weeping Rock track east of the lower Lyrebird junction
  • One of the two lookout platforms.

Park visitors will be able to access one of the lookout platforms, and all other walking tracks at Point lookout.

Safety alerts: New England Wilderness Walk wet weather warning

The Bellinger River catchment has experienced above average rainfall over the past few months and river levels can rise quickly with rain.  River crossings on the Wilderness Walk become extremely dangerous when river levels rise and walkers may become stranded.

Do not do the walk during periods of high river levels or forecast rainfall.

Check the Bureau of Meteorology for river levels and rainfall before setting off.
