Closed areas: Parts of Blue Mountains National Park closed

Many roads, fire trails and walking tracks within Blue Mountains National Park are closed due to infrastructure upgrades or damage caused by wet weather including subsidence, rockfalls, landslides and fallen trees.

The following areas are closed:

Katoomba and Leura

  • Honeymoon Bridge is closed due to rockfall risk.
  • Fern Bower track between Prince Henry Cliff walk (Grand Cliff Top walk) and Amphitheatre track is closed due to multiple landslides.
  • Federal pass between the Cooks Crossing (Kedumba River) and Dardanelles Pass (near the Giant Staircase) is closed due to a landslide. There is no access along Federal Pass from the bottom Giant Stairs to Scenic World. Visitors can access Scenic World bottom stations via Furber Steps only. Fares apply. 
  • Ruined Castle, Golden Stairs, Solitary Loop and Federal Pass west of Scenic World are closed due to multiple landslides.
  • Lone Lyrebird track is closed between Gordon Road and the War Memorial, due to subsidence. Detour is in place.
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk (part of Grand Cliff Top walk) is closed between Gordon Falls picnic area and Elysian Rock lookout, due to a landslide. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Part of Lindeman Pass is closed due to a major landslide below Gladstone lookout. Roberts Pass is closed due to rockfall and landslide hazards.
  • Six Foot track is affected by closures at Jenolan Caves.

Wentworth Falls and Woodford   

  • Valley of Waters track is closed below Sylvia Falls. There is no access to Roberts Pass, Vera Falls, Hippocrene Falls or Wentworth Falls from Valley of the Waters.
  • Charles Darwin walk (part of the Grand Cliff Top walk) is closed between Fletcher Street and Weeping Rock. Detours are in place to provide directions to Wentworth Falls picnic area. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Part of National Pass (west of Wentworth Falls middle crossing) is closed due to a major landslide and ongoing risks.
  • Wentworth Pass and Slack Stairs are closed due to multiple landslides.
  • Bedford Creek and Andersons Fire trail will be closed Monday to Friday until Friday 30th August 2024 due to road repairs. There will be no access from Anderson fire trail or Murphys Road to Ingar campground. There is also no exit to Woodford from Andersons fire trail. Trials and campgrounds will be open on Saturday and Sunday. Ingar campground is open on Saturday night only.

Blackheath, Mount Victoria and Bells Line of Road

  • Perrys Lookdown Road will be closed to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists from Monday 5 August to Friday 16 August 2024 for roadworks. The road will be open weekends. Alternative access to Acacia flat is available via Horse track (via Grand Canyon track) or Lockley Pylon.
  • Williams track (Govetts descent) and Rodriguez Pass are closed due to rockfalls and landslides.
  • Pulpit Rock Reserve, lookouts and walking track are closed. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information. Pulpit Rock walking track from Popes Glen is open as far as the NPWS boundary (as shown on Google maps).

Adventure recreation, canyons, abseiling and rock climbing

Some adventure recreation areas and routes are specifically closed where the access or exit road/track is mentioned above.

Closed parks: Abercrombie River National Park closed

Abercrombie River National Park is closed from Friday 26th July to 12pm, Monday 29th July 2024 due to flooded river crossings. The following campgrounds will also remain closed:

  • The Sink campground
  • The Beach campground
  • Silent Creek campground

These areas will re-open as soon as they are safe.

Please note: Bummaroo Ford campground will remain open.

Remember, it’s never safe to drive, ride or walk through flood waters, so you’ll need to reschedule your visit and avoid travel through areas in this park. Check Live Traffic NSW for up-to-date information about road closures. For assistance during severe weather visit the NSW SES website. Closed areas: State Mine Gully Road unscheduled weekend closure Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th July

State Mine Gully Road will be closed on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28st due to road works.

 

The closure on State Mine Gully Road applies from the boundary of the State Conservation Area for a length of 1km north.

 

Visitors are advised to use Old Bells Line of Road (Starting at the Zig Zag Railway) as the primary access into the State Conservation Area and for access to Glow Worm Tunnel Road during the weekend closure period.

 

The weekday closure of State Mine Gully Road will remain until 23rd August.

Closed areas: State Mine Gully Road weekday closure (alternative access to the State Conservation Area via Old Bells Line Of Road)

State Mine Gully Road from the boundary of the State Conservation Area for a length of 1km to the north will be closed on weekdays for road improvements works. State Mine Gully Road will be open from 6:00pm Friday to 6:00am Monday (inclusive of Saturday and Sunday) – Unless an unscheduled weekend closure is required.

 

The closure is effective from Tuesday 11th June until Friday 23rd August.

 

Visitors are advised to use Old Bells Line of Road as the primary access into the State Conservation Area during the weekday closure period.

North Ridge Road is now closed for works as part of the Gardens of Stone Multi-Day Walk. The closure will be in place until further notice.

Closed areas: Sunnyside Ridge Road closed

Sunnyside Ridge Road is closed due to unsafe conditions. Damaged mining infrastructure poses a risk to park visitors. The road will remain closed until remedial works make the road safe again.

The closure is inclusive of side tracks, The Spanish Steps and Campbells Road. This closure may be extended depending on progress of the works.

Closed areas: Glow Worm to Newnes walking track

The section from Glow Worm Tunnel to Newnes walking track from the Glow Worm tunnel exit to the ‘four-ways’ intersection, Wolgan Valley, will remain closed until further notice.

This closure is due to significant rainfall, geohazards and to allow track work.

Closed areas: Lost City South Closure

Lost City South is closed until December 2024 for construction associated with the Lost City Walking Track.

Major works include road repairs and access improvements, lookouts and facilities and construction of the Lost City Walking Track.

Lost City South will re-open in December 2024, with 4WD access currently open via Lost City north.

Safety alerts: Haulage trucks using Old Bells Line of Rd

Haulage trucks are in operation along Old Bells Line of Rd between the park entrance near Chifley Road (Zig Zag Railway) and Clarence Sands during the following times:

• Monday to Friday: 04.00 to 18.00

• Saturday: 04.00 to 13.00

 

During these times road users are reminded to:

• drive with caution

• adhere to the speed limit of 40 km/hr

• listen for truck movements via UHF-11

 

If a UHF radio is unavailable, NPWS recommends to access the reserve via State Mine Gully Rd. For more information contact the Kanangra Area office on (02) 6336 6200.
