Closed areas: Cape Byron walking track closed between Lighthouse and Wategos beach

The section of the Cape Byron walking track between Wategos Beach (east) and the Cape Byron Historic Lighthouse will be closed for maintenance work until August 2024.

Vehicle access around the Cape Byron State Conservation Reserve will not be affected. Vehicles can access the Pass and Palm Valley picnic area, Wategos Beach, and the Cape Byron Historic Lighthouse.

Visitors can safely walk to the Cape Byron Historic Lighthouse via:

  • Lee Lane to the Tallow Ridge Walking Track, or
  • Lighthouse Road down-road

Visitors may choose to along Clarkes Beach to access the Pass and the Palm Valley picnic area. The section of the walking track between the Palm Valley picnic area and Wategos Beach (west) remains open.
This closure is to improve accessibility and ensure visitor safety. For more information, please contact the local office. Penalties apply for non-compliance.

Closed areas: Cape Byron walking track closed between Captain Cook lookout and Brooke Drive

The section of the Cape Byron Walking Track between Captain Cooks lookout carpark and Brooke Drive is closed for maintenance from mid-April until mid-May.

Vehicle access around the Cape Byron State Conservation Reserve is not be affected. Vehicles can access the Pass and Palm Valley picnic area, Wategos Beach and the Cape Byron Historic Lighthouse.

Visitors can safely walk to the Cape Byron Historic Lighthouse via:

Closed areas: North Head Road Temporary Closure - Road Works

North Head Road within Brunswick Heads Nature Reserve will be closed for road maintenance from Monday 8 April 2024 for up to 3-5 days between 8am – 4pm weather depending.

  • in Cape Byron State Conservation Area in the North Coast region
    • Cape Byron State Conservation Area is open all hours, but may have to close at times due to poor weather or fire danger.
    • Cape Byron Lighthouse lawn is open 8am to sunset.
    • The Maritime Museum in the former Lighthouse Keeper’s office at the base of the lighthouse is open 10am to 4pm daily.
    • Opening before 8am for events or disabled access can be arranged by prior notice – contact NPWS Byron Bay office during business hours 02 6639 8300.
  • Park entry fees:

    Cape Byron Lighthouse lawn and Information Centre: $10 per vehicle per hour/$4 per hour motorcycles. Maximum 1 hour per vehicle per calendar day, including all NPWS annual passholders.

    Captain Cook lookout, Cosy Corner, and The Pass: $5 per vehicle/motorcycle per hour. Tap and pay card or phone payments accepted at pay machines. Cash and credit cards accepted at Cape Byron Information Centre.

    Coach entry: $30 per coach up to 30 seats; $57 per coach 31 to 43 seats; $94 per coach 44 seats and over.
