Getting there and parking

Split Rock walking track is in the northern area of Mutawintji National Park. Please contact the Broken Hill office for road conditions and recommended directions.

To get there from Broken Hill:

  • Take the Silver City Highway towards Tibooburra and look for the Mutawintji National Park turnoff.
  • Follow Mutawintji turn off until enter the park and continue to Old Coach road.
  • Follow Old Coach road to the picnic area.
  • The walk starts at the gate opposite the picnic area.

Parking

Parking is available at the Old Coach picnic area.

Best times to visit

Split Rock walking track is best visited during autumn, winter and spring when daytime weather is pleasant. Summer in the outback can be very hot.

Facilities

  • There aren’t any bins so you’ll need to take all rubbish away with you.
  • No fuel or food is available at Mutawintji National Park.
  • Drinkable bore water is available at the visitor centre, but it should be boiling before use.

Safety messages

Pick up an information brochure at the self-service visitor centre for that includes a park map and safety information.

Heavy rain can close roads in and around the Mutawintji National Park. It’s a good idea to prepare extra food, fuel and supplies in case you need to extend your stay.

Safety is of high priority in outback areas. In summer, temperatures can reach up to 50°C in some places. Food, water and fuel supplies can be scarce. Before you head off, check for road closures and use our contacts to stay safe in the outback.
