Overview

Embark on the 1km Salt Caves Dam walking track at dawn or dusk, to experience Pilliga Forest in all its glory. This short track in Timmallallie National Park links the scenic Salt Caves picnic area with nearby Salt Caves Dam.

After enjoying a picnic or barbecue lunch in the company of the birds at Salt Caves picnic area, wander along the track to Salt Caves Dam. This popular watering hole for local native wildlife is also a great spot for birdwatching.

During spring, immerse yourselves in the beautiful wildflowers peppered along this walk, and absorb views of the distinct Australian landscape.

Bring your binoculars and keep an eye out for the myriad of woodland bird species feasting on the wildflowers. A colourful sign at the picnic area will help identify some of the likely suspects.

If you're keen for a longer visit, Salt Caves campground is a good base when visiting Timmallallie National Park and Pilliga Forest. You can walk up to Pilliga Forest lookout tower.

    Pause at Salt Caves picnic area on your exploration of Pilliga Forest and Timmallallie National Park. After a barbecue lunch, take a short walk to Pilliga Forest lookout tower, or a longer hike up to look for birds.
