This is an immersive 4-week program to help kids aged 5 to 12 build confidence, curiosity and a strong connection to nature. They’ll visit a different location within Warrumbungle National Park each week to discover new environments and learn fresh skills. This will be mapped out in the first week.
Expect short bushwalks, interactive games and creative activities that explore how we can care for and enjoy Australia’s natural places. Special visits from National Parks and Wildlife Service staff will give children a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to work as a park ranger and care for protected landscapes.
Across the four weeks, children will investigate:
- Bush safety: learn how to stay safe and prepared outdoors.
- Animal tracks and scats: uncover clues left behind by wildlife.
- Bushfire awareness: understand fire in the Australian landscape.
- Geology: discover how Warrumbungle’s dramatic volcanic features were formed.
- History: learn about the people and stories connected to the park.
- Biodiversity: get to know the plants and animals that call the park home.
- Conservation: learn why national parks matter and how we can help protect them.
- Navigation skills: use maps and basic orientation techniques.
Each Saturday session includes age-appropriate activities, group challenges and a short craft or reflection activity. By the end of the program, kids will have built new skills, friendships and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. They’ll have the confidence to explore it safely and responsibly as an expert junior ranger.
