Get your bearings on a surfboard with Ability Surf in Byron Bay's world-famous swells. The coaches are allied health professionals who can help people of all abilities become more confident in the waves, using physiotherapy and occupational therapy techniques.
You’ll start with a one-to-one session in still water, where coaches help you work on surf and beach basics while learning about your needs and abilities. Then you’ll start tackling beginner surf breaks around Walgun Cape Byron State Conservation Area. If you’re keen to level-up, you can also join small, inclusive group sessions.
Parents or carers need to come along to lessons. It’s a great opportunity to see surfers build skills and resilience in a supportive environment and become more independent accessing the beach and surf. The crew at Ability Surf provide all equipment for the 1-hour classes, including wetsuits, surfboards, life vests and rash shirts. Class locations depend on the surf conditions and how your skills are progressing.
