Jenolan Caves Karst Conservation Reserve is closed from 7am to 11am Wednesday 16th June 2021 (on morning program.), for an aerial pest animal control operation. Penalties apply for non-compliance. For more information, contact the local park office at Kanangra Area on 02 6336 6200.

Safety alerts: Jenolan Karst Conservation Reserve open - Restricted vehicle access

The Jenolan Caves Visitor precinct will be opening from Monday 10 May 2021 under restricted conditions. 

Road Access

  • Transport For NSW have confirmed 2 Mile Road will reopen on Monday 10 May 2021 for public access up to Carpark 2.
  • There will be a gate just below Carpark 2 stopping any non-essential vehicles from accessing the site beyond this point.


  • Transport For NSW has advised that 150 cars per day will be allowed to travel on 2 Mile Road. This capacity has been set based on the amount of traffic deemed safe to manage without traffic control. 
  • The 150 car capacity includes guest cars, staff cars, suppliers as well as contractors.
  • Based on average number of persons per car, 150 cars allowance, this will allow approximately 300-350 guests on site per day.

Guest Access

  • Pre-booking is mandatory, and there will be no entry to the site without a valid booking.
  • This will be communicated via Variable Message Sign (VMS) boards in Lithgow, Oberon, and at the Kanangra Walls Road turn off at the top of 2 Mile Road, as well as via social media and the Jenolan Caves website.
  • The VMS boards at the Lithgow turn-off and Oberon (where there is still reception) will outline that you need to have a valid ticket, and give you an opportunity to purchase a ticket before you arrive at the top of 2 Mile Road.
  • Jenolan Caves Management are aiming to have wifi at the top of the 2 Mile Road, so people who do not have a valid ticket can purchase before they drive down to Carpark 2. This service will not be available for the first opening period.

Cave tours

  • Baal, Orient, and Chifley Caves will be open for tours during three time slots.
  • Ticket booking is essential.

Safety alerts: Six Foot track open - restricted vehicle movements at Jenolan Caves

The NPWS section of Six Foot track is open for walkers, however changed conditions exist at Jenolan Caves business precinct.

  • The 5 Mile is closed to all traffic, and the 2 Mile has restricted conditions.
  • Jenolan Caves are expected to reopen from Monday 10 May 2021

Safety alerts: Advanced navigation skills required for remote walks

As a result of recent fire and flood impacts, many of the Kanangra-Boyd National Park traditional walking tracks will require advanced navigation skills to complete the walks.

Many of the remote walking tracks are impacted by vegetation regrowth and many tree hazards exist along the paths.

Traditional walking pads are now very hard to see and maps and GPS devices may be required to complete the walking tracks.

Safety alerts: Advanced navigation required for Kanangra to Katoomba (K2K) track

Kanangra to Katoomba (K2K) track has been damaged by fire, storms and flooding. The trail is overgrown with significant understorey brush and grass growth.

Fallen trees, vegetation covered loose rocks and burnt out stump holes may result in slips, trips and falls. Advanced navigation skills are required to undertake this trail.

Closed areas: Campgrounds closed

NPWS is working to reopen all campgrounds and accommodations where possible. However, some locations need to remain closed to ensure compliance with the current rules on public gatherings, or for other reasons such as fire or flood damage.

From 1 June 2020, all reopened campgrounds and campsites will require a booking to be made before you visit.

Other planned events: 1080 wild dog and fox control program

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a strategic ground and aerial baiting program for the control of wild dogs and foxes.

The operations will involve the use of meat, manufactured products and Canid Pest Ejectors (CPE’s) containing Poison 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate). The program will be continuous and ongoing from Thursday 31 December 2020 to Wednesday 30 June 2021 in the following parks, reserves and state conservation areas:

  • Abercrombie National Park and State Conservation Area
  • Gardens of Stone National Park
  • Wollemi National Park
  • Blue Mountains National Park
  • Turon National Park
  • Marrangaroo National Park
  • Mares Forest National Park
  • Kanangra-Boyd National Park
  • Jenolan Karst Conservation Reserve

These programs have been designed to meet NPWS priority conservation and state focused biosecurity issues. All baiting locations will be signposted.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.
