Earlier this year, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and NSW National Parks successfully ‘relit’ the historic Green Cape Lighthouse. Join us for a tour of the lighthouse and learn all about the newly installed 240w LED lights, which are now visible for 27.8km out to sea. First lit in 1883, Green Cape Lighthouse is the southernmost and tallest lighthouse in NSW.
As you walk with a knowledgeable NPWS guide, you'll discover the unique architecture and fascinating history of the lighthouse, and what life was like for lighthouse keepers living in this remote stretch of coast with their families. You’ll hear the tragic stories of the Ly-ee Moon and many other shipwrecks that occurred in the area. It’s well worth climbing the 116 stairs of the lighthouse to enjoy spectacular panoramic views over Disaster Bay and the rugged coastline.
This is an exciting time for Green Cape Lighthouse, as it’s been 34 years since the lighthouse was decommissioned and an external steel structure was built to host a navigation light. That soon to-be-removed structure is now dormant, and the lighthouse once again shines bright as a sentinel guiding vessels safely to port.
Not visiting Beowa National Park until later in the year? Book a spring tour and visit at the height of the whale migration. Whales are often seen very close to Green Cape, offering stunning displays of power and agility as they pass. Green Cape is an ideal vantage point to spot them, and our guide will have powerful binoculars on hand. They’ll share all the whale facts and knowledge you'll need to make this experience the highlight of your holidays.
