The location of cameras and how the captured data is used can vary in response to operational requirements and visitation levels. The location of traffic monitoring cameras is signposted in either direction of approach.

What are traffic monitoring cameras?

They are not speed cameras, they monitor traffic flow and volume in our most popular national parks, where visitation continues to grow.

The cameras take a series of static photos of vehicles, including registration plates, as vehicles approach and leave the camera zones. The information obtained is used by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to improve your park experience and safety.

Better information on where people are going and how long they stay will help us understand traffic flow, congestion and carpark capacity. This is especially important during peak visitation periods when there can be extended delays for vehicles entering popular areas of a park.

Data obtained will also help NPWS to plan future park improvements and may help to support the management of emergencies

Are the cameras used to charge park entry fees?

No.

The cameras don't replace park entry tickets or annual passes. The cameras are only collecting data about vehicle movements in high-traffic areas of a park, by taking a series of static photos. NPWS use alternative methods to manage entry fee compliance, and infringements continue to apply for non-compliance.

Will my motorway e-tag be charged a fee?

No.

The cameras do not collect any information from electronic tag devices. The cameras only collect data about vehicle movements.

Do I still need a day pass or annual pass?

Yes.

If you're visiting a fee-collectingnational park, you'll still need to have a valid annual pass or day pass. Learn more about pass options here.
