This resource has been designed as an action research project in collaboration with Greening Australia, which may be available to assist with tree-planting activities in schools in the Greater Sydney region. Other schools across NSW can also complete the project by supplying their own trees or partnering with another local organisation or council.

Students will explore:

  • the concept of ‘urban heat island effect’, which is taking place in our cities and towns
  • the effects of climate change on local environments and how it influences the management of spaces.

Throughout the project, students will examine how these concepts are impacting their own school environment.

Teachers can use the unit as a whole or choose individual lessons to support learning already being done in the classroom.
