NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will be conducting a baiting program in Garigal National Park between Saturday 1 August 2020 and Sunday 31 January 2021. The program involves the use of manufactured baits, fresh baits and Canid Pest Ejectors (CPEs) containing 1080 poison (sodium fluoroacetate) for the control of foxes. The operation is continuous and ongoing. Don’t touch baits or ejector devices.

All baiting locations are signposted.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Fox baiting in this reserve is aimed at reducing their impact on threatened species.

Closed areas: Malabar Headland Anzac Rifle Range

1. For public safety, the eastern section of Malabar Headland National Park is closed during ANZAC Rifle Range operations.

These closures may occur with little or no notice.

2. When is the eastern section of the park closed?

  • Every Saturday from 7.30am
  • Every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month
  • Monday 11 January through to Sunday 17 January 2021 
  • Saturday 23 January to Monday 25 January 2021

Please note: 

  • ANZAC Rifle Range is booked for shooting from Monday 11 January to Sunday 17 January 2021.
  • Normal Club shooting day Saturday 16 January 2021
  • The 2020 Queens Championships are scheduled to be held from Saturday 23 January to Monday 25 January 2021.

3. Do not enter the eastern section of the park (including Boora Point walking track) when:

  • Red flags are flying above the range
  • There are warning signs at the park's entry points (South Maroubra Beach and Fishermans Road carpark).
  • Park entry gates are closed

These closures apply to the eastern section of the park only (Boora Point walking track).

The western section of the park (Western Escarpment walking track) remains open.

The range operation schedule is provided by the NSW Rifle Association.

The exhibition area of Kamay Botany National Park Visitor Centre is closed to ensure COVID-19 safety is appropriately managed for visitors. This closure will be reviewed monthly. Please check the website for updated information.

Closed areas: Update to visitor area closures

Many COVID-19 restrictions have now been lifted from visitor precincts and facilities. However, several tracks and trails will remain closed while upgrades and remediation works are completed. 

Please note the following updates:

  • Tunks Ridge campground remains closed until further notice while staff assess safety concerns 
  • Bookings for Twin Beaches South and North campgrounds are now available online.

Please remember to practice appropriate social distancing requirements and good hygiene. From Thursday 31 December 2020, the maximum group size for an outdoor gathering will be reduced to 30 people, including children. Groups are still expected to maintain social distancing. If you arrive at a national park or other public space and it is too crowded to practice social distancing, it is your responsibility to leave the area. Do not wait to be instructed by NPWS or police.

Yeramba Lagoon loop walking track in Georges River National Park is closed from behind Henry Lawson Drive down to the lagoon.

The pedestrian bridge over the lagoon runout channel has been removed while the weir is removed. This section of track is impassable and has been closed off.

This section is expected to reopen in late February 2021.

Swimming is not advisable in Berowra Creek at certain times as the water may be subject to variable pollution levels and algal blooms. Please refer to the Hornsby Shire Council website before swimming in Berowra Creek. Alternatively you can call the Hornsby Council 24 hour information line on 9847 6666 or the Algal information line on 1800 999 457.

Swimming at Fishponds is not advised at any time due to heavy water pollution.

Safety alerts: Protect your picnic - native birds may steal your food

Birds at Nielsen Park are attempting to steal food from visitors' picnics and tables due to unauthorised feeding of local native birds. To try and reduce this unwanted behaviour, NPWS is asking visitors to not actively feed any wildlife and to please bring suitable methods to cover your food. These include storage containers with sealed lids or an umbrella to cover your picnic to reduce food visibility and access.

Please note, it is illegal to feed wildlife in a national park. NPWS officers are monitoring the area and fines apply if visitors are seen actively feeding birds and promoting this unwanted behaviour.

Transport for New South Wales are currently undertaking land-based investigations in support of the reinstatement of the ferry wharves at La Perouse and Kurnell within Kamay Botany Bay National Park.

Some parts of North Head in Sydney Harbour National Park are closed due to fire damage. The closed areas include:

  • North Head Scenic Drive, after the carparks opposite Bella Vista Cafe and before the North Head Scenic Drive loop road.
  • Bluefish Drive past the Gunner Road Car Park entrance
  • Fairfax walk and lookout
  • All tracks and trails south of Bluefish Drive and along North Head Scenic Drive past the Q Station roundabout.

Open areas include:

  • Q Station
  • The track between Shelly Beach and Bluefish Drive
  • North Head Scenic Drive until just beyond the Bella Vista Cafe
  • Collins Flat Beach
  • Collins Beach Road

A section of Flat Rock track - from the Killarney Drive entrance to the Downpatrick Street entrance - is currently closed until further notice due to track safety issues where the track passes through private property near Killarney Point:

  • Walkers heading west should exit Flat Rock track at the eastern end of Killarney Drive and use Killarney Drive until you reach Downpatrick Street. Then walk down the street and re-enter Flat Rock track from the Downpatrick Street fire trail.
  • Walkers heading east should exit Flat Rock track at the Downpatrick Street fire trail and use Downpatrick Street, then Killarney Drive until you reach the end of Killarney Drive. Re-enter Flat Rock track from the Killarney Drive entrance.

  • in Sydney Harbour National Park in the Sydney and surrounds region
  • Sydney Harbour National Park is open sunrise to sunset but may have to close at times due to poor weather or fire danger.

  • Park entry fees:

    Bradleys Head carpark: $8 per vehicle per day. North Head carpark: $5 per vehicle per day. There are pay and display machines that accept cards and coins - no change given. Chowder Bay Road parking: Monday-Friday: $3 per hour, to a maximum of $16 per day. Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays: $4 per hour, to a maximum of $20 per day. If you hold an NPWS All Parks or Multi Parks Pass, you can park free for up to four hours per day - additional time can be purchased. Car parks operated by Sydney Harbour Federation Trust or Mosman Council are not covered by your pass. Please check signs carefully.

    Other fees:

    Landing fees or tour fees apply to visit Sydney Harbour islands. All public visitors to Shark, Clark, Goat or Rodd Island, or Fort Denison, need to pay a $7 per person landing fee. To arrange, please contact 1300 072 757 (13000 PARKS). Annual NSW Parks Passes do not cover landing fees.
