Caring for our special places is a Stage 1 (Years 1-2) Geography incursion for schools in the NSW Coffs Harbour region. Students will dress up and role-play a story about rangers and how they look after national parks.

This is a fun and interactive school incursion for young students. They’ll come away with an appreciation for our national parks, as well as an understanding of how we care for these special places.

This incursion supports the K-10 Geography syllabus and its topic, Features of Places.

Objectives

Students will:

  • Acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land
  • Learn how national parks are areas of land where native plants and animals, as well as places important to people, are protected.
  • Gain an understanding of the different roles of various people in a national park
  • Explore the importance of natural places to people
  • Identify what makes places special and what we do to care for them.

Key inquiry questions:

  • What are the features of, and activities in, places?
  • How can we care for places?
  • How can spaces within a place be used for different purposes?
