Safety alerts: High altitude walks - Snow covered and hazardous winter conditions

Many areas above about 1900m in altitude in Kosciuszko National Park are currently snow covered from recent snowfalls and post winter snow. Please note the following information when visiting these areas:

General:

Be prepared:

  • Low visibility, extreme winds, heavy snowfalls can all occur without warning.
  • Wear and carry appropriate clothing, carry navigation equipment and be prepared for extreme conditions.
  • Track surfaces and signs may not be visible.

Travel with care:

  • Choose your routes carefully
  • Steep and icy terrain and thin snow/ice cover over rivers and lakes can make travel very dangerous.
  • Deep soft spring snow can collapse underneath you - mind your steps.

Avalanche:

  • Even at this time of year there is a risk of avalanches in the higher areas of Kosciuszko National Park, particularly on Main Range.
  • Steeper, treeless slopes and the tops of ridges where overhanging cornices develop carry the greatest risk.
  • Snow stability varies with wind, temperature and the amount and patterns of snowfall.
  • Avalanches can occur at any time through winter or spring and can be fatal.
  • Back country travellers should check snow and weather conditions before departure and remain alert.

Main Range higher areas - areas above about 2100m, including: Higher parts of Kosciuszko walk, Main Range walk, Summit walk, Mt Stillwell walk and Hanells Spur walk:

Expect some continuous snow cover and long stretches:

  • Take a map and compass and know how to use them. All tracks are under snow and not visible. Most don't have above snow markers.
  • Take extreme caution when on all steep slopes.

Main Range lower areas - areas above 1900m, including lower parts of Kosciuszko walk, Main Range walk, Summit walk, Mt Stillwell walk and Hanells Spur walk

Access to The Big Hole walking track requires a river crossing of the Shoalhaven River.

Safety alerts: Trailer access prohibited on some fire trails

Within Deua National Park some trails are not suitable for trailer access. National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has had advisory signs in place for some time to encourage people towing 4WD trailers to avoid some of the steeper, harder-to-maintain trails in the park. However, inappropriate use of signposted trails by 4WDs towing trailers is continuing, and is causing ongoing damage. Therefore, NPWS is now prohibiting the use of trailers on the following trails in Deua National Park:

  • Dampier Mountain trail
  • Oulla Creek trail
  • Minuma Range trail
  • Merricumbene trail
  • Mongamula trail
  • Dry Creek trail

It is now an offence to tow trailers on these trails. The penalty for towing trailers on these trails is a $300 penalty infringement notice, or higher if the matter is taken to court.

By keeping trailers away from these identified trails, you benefit everyone by reducing:

  • the safety risk to yourself and others
  • damage to the park environment and your assets
  • park maintenance costs.

Trailer access to Bendethera is still available from Moruya via Little Sugarloaf Road and Bendethera trail. From Braidwood, this increases travel time by about 30 minutes to 1 hour.
