Closed parks: Closed Park for aerial shooting pest control operation

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting aerial shooting for pest animal management purposes from Monday 3rd June to Thursday 6 June 2024 in Werakata National Park (NP).

The purpose of the program is to primarily target deer as part of a state-wide conservation program and address our biosecurity obligations. It aims to reduce the significant impact deer have on threatened species and to reduce the economic impact of deer on neighbouring vineyards.

The shooting area will be closed to all visitors when aerial shooting is underway. Closure signs will be placed at all formal visitor access points to the shooting area.

Do not enter the shooting area. Penalties apply to unauthorised entry during closures.

Closed areas: Glow Worm Tunnel Road and Camp Road roadside vegetation management

NPWS will be implementing roadside vegetation management during May and June 2024 in the Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area and Wollemi National Park.

Roads affected are:

• Camp Road between Eastern Boundary Road and Forest Camp:
o Closed to the public for approximately 1 week.
o Access to Forest Camp via Eastern Boundary Road

• Glowworm Tunnel Road from Bungleboori Day Use Area to Galah Mountain Road:
o Traffic control will be in place for approximately 3 to 4 weeks. Sections of the road will be one-way traffic only. Expect short delays.

Please use caution when driving and obey all signs and directions.

Safety alerts: Visitor Safety Alert: Feral Horses

Feral horses move through this campground day and night. Campers at Little Murray and Polblue campgrounds should set up tents as close to their vehicles as possible.

 

Aggressive horse behaviour can pose a safety risk for visitors. Aggressive behaviour includes snorting, head bobbing, stomping front legs, ears erect, aggressive stance and approaching in an aggressive manner.

 

What to do around aggressive horses:

· avoid the animals, especially if a stallion is present and there are mares nearby

· retreat to your vehicle

· wave your arms around and make lots of noise

· walk in a group rather than as an individual

· always be aware of your immediate surroundings.

NPWS is completing construction works to maintain and renew the Summit Walking Track and WW2 Fortification infrastructure on Tomaree Headland.

Tomaree Summit will be remain open during this time however visitors are asked to adhere to any detour signage and advice given from any staff or contractors on site.

Some of parts of Glenrock State Conservation Area will be closed for Mountain Bike Trails maintenance works. The works are scheduled to start on Monday 20 May 2024, weather permitting. The works are expected to take 2-3 weeks depending on the weather. Closure signage and barriers will be in place whilst these works are being carried out to protect the workers.

Catherine Hill Bay (Catho) Lookout will be closed for maintenance works from 07/05/2024 until 01/06/2024. 

Temporary fencing will be in place, please do not enter closed areas during this time.

Works aim to regrade the road surface and redirect traffic to a two way drive in and out removing the loop. Old unsightly concrete blocks will be replaced with large sandstone blocks that will act as seating around the site.

This will all help to tie in the proposed coastal walk that will run through the heritage precinct.

Minor roadworks along Glow Worm Tunnel Road will take place from Wednesday 10 January to Saturday 1 June 2024. This includes small sections of State Mine Gully Road and Old Bells Line of Road. The road won't be closed, however there will be traffic management in place to guide vehicles around roadworks.

Erosion and surface damage has occurred on the southern half of Monument Hill walking track towards Little Bay picnic area following significant rainfall events. Remediation works are underway and additional care should be taken around machinery in the area.

Closed areas: Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive Future Closure - 20 May to 31 June 2024

Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive will be closed from 20 May to 31 June 2024 for land slip repairs. Additional closures will apply for subsequent surface repair works with specific dates to be provided closer to commencement of works.

  • Peacock Creek campground will remain open and can be accessed from the west via Peacock Creek Road or from the east via Sextonville Road
  • Cambridge Plateau picnic area and related walking tracks will remain closed for the duration of road works
  • There will be no access to the cabin north of Cambridge Plateau picnic area during most of the closure period. Guests can contact the cabin owner regarding their stay and access requirements.

Closed areas: Toonumbar Forest Drive and Cox's Road closed

From 1 January 2024, Toonumbar Forest Drive and Cox's Road are closed until winter 2024. Estimated re-opening date is early June due to ongoing wet weather.

Sherwood lookout and Murray Scrub lookout remain closed until the roads are re-opened. Iron Pot Creek campground and Murray Scrub walking track are only accessible via Murray Scrub Road from Afterlee.

Both roads are not safely trafficable in wet conditions and are therefore seasonally closed from late spring until late autumn dependant on rainfall during the wet season. There may also be additional closures during forecast weather events and damage during the winter period.

Bulmers Road will be closed for repair works from 4 April to approximately 6 May 2024.

The closure applies to a short 100m section of road approxmately 1.5km East of Cherry Tree Road. Works will take approximately 4 weeks to complete dependant on weather.

There will be strictly no through access along the closed section of road for the duration of works. Alternative access is via the Bruxner Highway at each end of Bulmers Road.

Nightcap Range Road will be closed for major landslip repairs from 6th May 2024 until 13th July 2024. During this time, the road will be closed in both directions between Rummery Road and Nightcap Ridge.

To allow for flood recovery roadworks to be conducted the primary access road to most visitor facilities in Washpool NP, Coachwood Drive, will be closed from 7am Monday 29 April until 5pm Thursday 23 May 2024. Due to this closure Bellbird and Coombadjha campgrounds, the Coachwood picnic area, and all walks that depart from these locations are also closed.

This road closure will not impact the World Heritage Walk, but for visitors intending to undertake the Walk during this time please contact the NPWS Northern Tablelands Area office on 02 6739 0700 to discuss camping options.

This closure does not extend to Four Bull Hut or the horse riding trails in the north-west area of Washpool NP.

The section of the Cape Byron walking track between Wategos Beach (east) and the Cape Byron Historic Lighthouse will be closed for maintenance work until August 2024.

Vehicle access around the Cape Byron State Conservation Reserve will not be affected. Vehicles can access the Pass and Palm Valley picnic area, Wategos Beach, and the Cape Byron Historic Lighthouse.

Visitors can safely walk to the Cape Byron Historic Lighthouse via:

  • Lee Lane to the Tallow Ridge Walking Track, or
  • Lighthouse Road down-road

Visitors may choose to along Clarkes Beach to access the Pass and the Palm Valley picnic area. The section of the walking track between the Palm Valley picnic area and Wategos Beach (west) remains open.

There is no road access due to the Wolgan Road collapse and continuing land slip risk at Wolgan Gap. Wolgan Road is managed by Lithgow Council.

Access to Mermaid Pools is permanently closed including for swimming. Sudden large swells and tides create major waves that wash over the rocks and pools.

Do not access this area. The severe conditions at this site have caused a number of significant injuries and deaths in the past.

Mermaid Pools have never been a designated visitor site due to the extreme nature of the surf and tides at this location. There is no approved public access walking track to Mermaid Pools.

Bangalore Falls waterfall Lookout is closed from Saturday 13th April 2024 due to recent weather event causing damage to the lookout and ongoing tree risk to visitors. 

The Bangalore Falls walking track loop remains open and safe for visitors who will continue to have views of the waterfall from the walking track (it is situated several metres back from the closed off lookout).

NPWS has placed a temporary barrier to close the lookout and will assess the lookout as a priority and reopen once it can be made safe for visitors.

  • South along new concrete path on eastern side of Pacific Highway
  • South onto southern end of North Solitary Drive
  • East onto North Sapphire Road to the beach access at Beachstone Cafe

Green Bluff is alternatively accessible from the south via Rutile trail, off Ivory Circuit in North Sapphire.

Due to storm damage, Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive will be closed between Peacock Creek Road and Mount Babyl until 31 July 2024. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

The road will remain open between Cambridge Plateau picnic area and the Bruxner Highway. This section of road is not suitable for 2WD vehicles in wet weather and is not suitable for heavy vehicles until slip repairs in May 2024.

  • Peacock Creek campground will remain open and can be accessed via Peacock Creek Road, Sextonville Road or Iron Pot Creek Road
  • Cambridge Plateau picnic area and Culmarran Valley Track and Cambridge loop walk will remain open and accessible from the south via the Bruxner Highway
  • Guests wish to access the cabin north of Cambridge Plateau picnic area can do so from the south via the Bruxner Highway

Safety alerts: Dangerous sea and unsafe swimming conditions

Please do not swim or enter the water at unpatrolled beaches in Tomaree National Park. Tragically, people have drowned while swimming at several locations within the park.

Many of the beaches are remote, unpatrolled and have dangerous rip currents, unexpected large waves and sudden drop offs. Ocean conditions can change rapidly.

Mobile phone service is also limited - you may not be able to call for help if you need it.

NPWS recommends swimming at patrolled beaches between the red and yellow flags at the following locations:

- Fingal Beach

- One Mile Beach

- Anna Bay

Construction is nearing completition on the Ngambaa Feral Predator-Free Area which has necessitated the closure of roads in the reserve for visitor safety.

 

Cedar Park picnic area will remain open and available for visitor access. 

 

The following roads are subject to permanent closure as part of the construction and operation of the feral predator free area: 

  • Wittigs Road
  • parts of Stockyard Creek Road
  • Seams Road
  • Jacks Road
  • Buds Crossing Road

 

Construction works will be completed in next 8 weeks completing 23k of fencing and other works.

Construction works have included:

  • clearing the fence corridor
  • building the fence
  • installing bridge and culvert crossings.

Other planned events: Temporary closure of Boambee Creek Bridge during weekdays at southern end of Solitary Islands Coastal Walk

Please be aware that at the southern end of Solitary Islands Coastal Walk (SICW) there is temporary closure which impacts walker access between Boambee Beach and Boambee Headland.

 

The Boambee Creek Bridge footbridge will be closed Mon- Fri 6am-6pm until July 2024 (project finish date TBC). 

 

It is recommended walkers attempt this section during weekends, during times which the pedestrian access bridge is open to the public.

 

Please be aware that Boambee Creek is several metres deep with a strong tidal flow to the ocean, so safe crossing requires using the bridge.

 

Alternatively, should you wish to pass during the closure window - please bypass Boambee Beach via town roads with adjacent concrete walking paths:

Southbound - from the Coffs Harbour Jetty - walk 1.6km west along Harbour Drive to Hogbin Dr roundabout, then 6.6km south down Hogbin Drive walking track to Sawtell Rd roundabout, then 1.3km east along Sawtell Road to Boambee Headland - continue south on SICW. 

Northbound - from Boambee Headland - walk 1.3km west along Sawtell Road to Hogbin Dr roundabout, then 6.6km north along Hogbin Drive walking track to Harbour Dr roundabout and 1.6km east along Harbour Drive to the Coffs Harbour Jetty - continue north on SICW.

 

This project is outside of NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service managed lands, but this notice is to inform visitors that these works will affect the SICW walk route continuation further south of the Coffs Coast Regional Park.

The operations will use meat baits containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes. Signs will be placed at the entry to all the baiting locations. Domestic pets are not permitted in NPWS managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting locations. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Safety alerts: Major Roadworks in Jilliby State Conservation Area - Commencing 27 December 2023

Major roadworks are scheduled to commence from Wednesday 27th December 2023 in Jilliby State Conservation Area (Southern Precinct) and part of Ourimbah State Forest.

Partial and intermittent road closures should be expected. The roads that will be affected are:

  • Red Hill Road
  • Prestons Ridge Road
  • Bradleys Point Road
  • Campbells Point Road and 
  • Tooheys Road.

 

Visitors are asked to avoid the area (if possible). Otherwise, please be aware of trucks and machinery using and working on the above roads and to drive to the conditions. Warning signs and traffic control will be in place. Work is expected to be completed by June 2024. The work is funded as part of the Fire Access and Fire Trail (FAFT) program aimed at providing safe and strategic fire trails for fire response and access.

Middle Camp DA/2238/2017 - has begun works in the Catherine Hill Bay area adjacent to lands managed by Munmorah State Conservation Area. These works due to the location now has temporary closures to access trails for Munmorah SCA. This is necessary for the contractor managing this development in order to maintain a safe construction site and public safety.

NPWS apologises for the inconvenience and are unable to provide alternate access.

This temporary closure affects: 

  1. Collier fire trail
  2. Powerline fire trail and 
  3. Middle Camp fire trail

Please be advised that these closures will not stop access to fire vehicles in emergencies and does not cause a safety concern.

Safety alerts: Watagan Road/Heaton Road closed due to landslips

Watagan Road (also known as Heaton Road) is closed until further notice due to a major landslip on the Cessnock City Council section.

There is no access from the cattle grid at the southern end of Heaton Road, Quorrobolong south, uphill to the Georges Road intersection in the Watagans NP.

This access road to Olney, Heaton State Forests and Watagans National Park is closed.

Work is currently underway way but will be complex, involve geotechnical planning, major earthworks and road realignment.

Closed areas: Parts of Sugarloaf State Conservation Area closed

Parts of Sugarloaf State Conservation Area are closed for approved underground mining operations. The affected areas (see map) have been closed to protect visitor safety, because they're subject to subsidence and remediation activities from the mining operations.

Great North walk remains open. An update will be provided should this situation change.

If you're visiting the park, please be aware of subsidence and pollution incidents that took place in 2013, which were greater than what was expected from normal mining operations. These included a cliff fall in the north, and a subsidence and grout leak incident in the central part of Sugarloaf State Conservation Area.

If you're planning to visit the park during this time, please stay on formed tracks and trails and observe all barriers, warning signs and safety messages. Areas subject to possible cliff fall or subsidence in both areas of the park are clearly marked.

Please do not swim or enter the water at Stockton Beach in the Worimi Conservation Lands. Tragically, people have drowned while swimming here.

The beach is remote, unpatrolled and has dangerous rip currents, unexpected large waves and sudden drop offs. Ocean conditions can change rapidly.

Mobile phone service is also limited here - you may not be able to call for help if you need it.

The trail becomes very slippery in damp or even misty weather and there is an increased risk of fallen trees blocking the trail. There are limited places to turn around safely if the trail is blocked. Visitors are encouraged to walk in to the Arboretum rather than drive.

The boardwalk between Tamboi trail and Brambles Green campground is closed due to flood damage.

Walkers on the Mungo Track can take the detour at Mungo Brush. Please follow the walking track to the beach and then walk south for 4km. Take the slashed management trail which connects the beach to Mungo Brush Road to re-join the Mungo track.

Closed areas: Area closed - Pink Caves

Pink Caves are closed to visitors because they are extremely unsafe to visit.

The caves are filled with water at high tide. Even at low tide they can be dangerous, as ocean swell sends unpredictable waves sweeping into the caves and across the rock shelf. Sudden rogue waves can cause serious injury and may drag visitors across the rocks or out to sea.

There’s no lifeguard service in this area and access for emergency services is limited. There’s no approved walking track to this location. Access to the caves involves walking over a rock shelf which is slippery, uneven and dangerous.

Visitors should take care when traversing all rock shelves and coastal areas located within Munmorah State Conservation Area.

Some areas of this park are closed until further notice due to the demolition of a bridge from a past flooding event.

The closed areas include the 4WD access to North Washpool, an area also known as Washpool rest area, entering from Baryulgil onto Collum Collum Road. The bridge is washed away at the junction of Washpool Creek and Collum Collum Road.

  • Washpool National Park’s 2WD entrance off Gwydir Highway onto Coachwood Drive and Washpool Forest Way is open.
  • Bellbird campground, Coombadjha campground and the Granites lookout and picnic areas are accessible.

Beach driving conditions remain variable due to changing swell, tides and weather conditions. Drivers are advised to exercise caution when driving and to check conditions before travel.

Please remember to:  

  • Look out for soft sand, erosion, wash outs and drop-offs.
  • Avoid driving through sea water, foam or large pools of water. Driving conditions can change rapidly. Several vehicles on this beach have ended up in the ocean or swamped by water.
  • Check conditions before arriving, and if in doubt save your visit for another day.

Please follow the directions of National Parks and Wildlife Service personnel and/or signage. Do not drive over the frontal dune or any vegetation.

This is regulated by NSW Fisheries and poses an on the spot $100 fine if non-compliant.

Before rock fishing you should always:

Stay safe, always watch the local conditions, never turn your back on the ocean and never fish alone.

If you’re in doubt don’t go out.

Phytophthora is a mould that causes dieback in plants. It's been found on the plateau in Barrington Tops National Park, predominantly on the Watergauge trail between Beean Beean and Black Swamp. The affected area is under quarantine with absolutely no visitor access.

Phytophthora is readily spread by mud carried by walkers' shoes and mountain-bike tyres. There are boot wash stations across the plateau for walkers to use, to ensure their boots 'Start clean, Stay clean'.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting an aerial baiting program from Monday 13 May 2024 to Friday 24 May 2024. The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes.

The program will take place in Avondale State Conservation Area, Booralong Nature Reserve, Bulagaranda Aboriginal Area, The Basin Nature Reserve, Indwarra National Park, Oxley Wild Rivers National Park & State Conservation Area, Single National Park and Warrabah National Park. 

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise the impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting locations. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.
