NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting an ongoing aerial baiting program from Monday 20th May 2024 to Friday 31st May 2024.

The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes. The program will take place in Dharug National Park (NP), Koolewong Flora Reserve (FR), Manobalai Nature Reserve (NR), Parr State Conservation Area (SCA), Wollemi FR, Wollemi SCA, Yengo NP.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species, and to minimise the impact of wild dogs on neighbouring stock.

Signs will be placed at the entry to the baiting location. Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Closed areas: Parts of Blue Mountains National Park closed

Many walking tracks, roads and fire trails within Blue Mountains National Park remain closed following sustained wet weather causing subsidence hazards, major landslides or infrastructure upgrades. 

The following areas are closed:

Katoomba and Leura

  • Honeymoon Bridge is closed due to rockfall risk.
  • Leura Falls lookout is closed from Monday 20 May for upgrade works.
  • Fern Bower between Prince Henry Cliff walk (Grand Cliff Top walk) and Amphitheatre track is closed due to multiple landslides.
  • Federal pass between the Cooks Crossing (Kedumba River) and the Giant Staircase is closed due to a landslide.  No access along Federal Pass from the bottom Giant Stairs to Scenic World.  
  • Ruined Castle, Golden Stairs, Solitary Loop and Federal Pass west of Scenic World are closed due to multiple landslides.
  • Lone Lyrebird track is closed between Gordon Road and the War Memorial, due to subsidence. Detour is in place.
  • Sections of Prince Henry Cliff walk (part of Grand Cliff Top walk) and Round walk are closed between Prince Henry picnic area and Scenic World until the end of June 2024 for track maintenance. Follow detour on Cliff Drive. Access to Furber Steps is from Prince Henry picnic area (Katoomba Falls Kiosk). Detours in place..
  • Bridal Veil View lookout and track (Leura) are closed for maintenance.
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk (part of Grand Cliff Top walk) is closed between Gordon Falls picnic area and Elysian Rock lookout, due to a landslide. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk (part of Grand Cliff Top walk) is closed between Fern Bower track, Echo Tree and Flat Rock lookout, due to a landslide. Please use Cliff Drive as short detour. 
  • Part of Lindeman Pass is closed due to a major landslide below Gladstone lookout. Roberts Pass is closed due to rockfall and landslide hazards.   
  • Six-Foot track is affected by multiple road closures.

Wentworth Falls and Woodford   

  • Valley of Waters track is closed below Sylvia Falls. There is no access to Roberts Pass, Vera Falls, Hippocrene Falls or Wentworth Falls from Valley of the Waters.
  • Charles Darwin walk (part of the Grand Cliff Top walk) is closed between Fletcher Street and Weeping Rock. Detours are in place to provide directions to Wentworth Falls picnic area. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Part of National Pass (west of Wentworth Falls middle crossing) is closed due to a major landslide and ongoing risks.
  • Wentworth Pass and Slack Stairs are closed due to multiple landslides.
  • Bedford Creek Trail will be closed Mon-Fri from 27 May to 5 July 2024 due to road repairs. There will be no access from Anderson Fire Trail or Murphies Road to Ingar Camping Area. There will be also be no exit to Woodford from Andersons Fire Trail. Trials and Camping area will be open Sat & Sun. Ingar Camping Area open Sat night only.    

Blackheath, Mount Victoria and Bells Line of Road

  • Evans Lookout Road will be closed beyond Grand Canyon car park from 7:00am Monday 3rd June to 5pm Thursday 6th June 2024 for road repairs. There will be no vehicle access to Evans lookout during this time. Pedestrians can use the walking track to the lookout which begins at the Grand Canyon car park toilets.
  • Williams track (Govetts descent) and Rodriguez Pass are closed due to rockfalls and landslides.
  • Pulpit Rock Reserve, lookouts and walking track are closed. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information. Pulpit Rock walking track from Popes Glen is open as far as the NPWS boundary (as shown on Google maps).

Adventure recreation, canyons, abseiling and rock climbing

Some adventure recreation areas and routes are specifically closed where the access or exit road/track is mentioned above.

Closed areas: Ganguddy Weir walk and The Long Cave circuit closed for track upgrade

The Wier Walk and access to the Long Cave circuit near Ganguddy/ Dunns Swamp are closed due to an essential upgrade of an elevated staircase.

The closure will begin on the 30th of May and be in place until the 14th of June. 

Contractors will be working on this structure during this time and there will be no pedestrian access.

Access to Platypus Point and the Pagoda Lookout remain open.

Some areas in Wollemi National Park around Ganguddy-Dunns Swamp Campground are closed from 7am, 29 May 2024 to 5pm, 12 June 2024 for a ground pest control operation.

The closed areas are:

  • Snakehaven Trail
  • Mycumbene Trail

The Ganguddy-Dunns Swamp campground and nearby walking tracks will remain open.

Closed areas: Glow Worm Tunnel Road and Camp Road roadside vegetation management

NPWS will be implementing roadside vegetation management during May and June 2024 in the Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area and Wollemi National Park.

Roads affected are:

• Camp Road between Eastern Boundary Road and Forest Camp:
o Closed to the public for approximately 1 week.
o Access to Forest Camp via Eastern Boundary Road

• Glowworm Tunnel Road from Bungleboori Day Use Area to Galah Mountain Road:
o Traffic control will be in place for approximately 3 to 4 weeks. Sections of the road will be one-way traffic only. Expect short delays.

Please use caution when driving and obey all signs and directions.
