Overview

King Charlie Waterhole picnic area is in Nocoleche Nature Reserve, near Wanaaring. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy the rare sight of a relatively permanent outback waterhole.

Pull up to this spot on the banks of the Paroo River to enjoy a barbecue and relax in the shade of a picnic shelter and river red gum trees. Then wander over to the edge of King Charlie Waterhole for a look.

Deep enough to provide year-round refuge for wildlife, King Charlie Waterhole is part of the internationally-significant Paroo River Wetlands Ramsar site. After it rains, or when the Paroo River flows, this area teems with life. Come to spot yabbies, crabs and birdlife, and see wildflowers burst into bloom. 

King Charlie Waterhole picnic area is the only part of Nocoleche Nature Reserve accessible to the public. Before you come, be sure to check for alerts and contact Bourke Shire Council for local road conditions and closures.
