Closed areas: Big Rocky trail closed

Big Rocky trail is closed from Monday 10 May to Wednesday 12 May 2021 for road works.

Other planned events: Closed areas for aerial spraying program

A number of areas will be closed for an aerial herbicide spraying operation between Monday 10 May 2021 and Friday 25 June 2021. For public safety, the areas being treated will be closed on the day they are sprayed. Advice on specific areas to be closed will be provided a week prior to spraying.

This spraying program is being carried out to control bitou bush on headlands and beaches in:

  • Booti Booti National Park
  • Saltwater National Park
  • Tomaree National Park
  • Myall Lakes National Park (including Broughton Island)
  • Darawank Nature Reserve
  • Khapphinghat Nature Reserve
  • Stormpetrel Nature Reserve
  • Little Broughton Island Nature Reserve
  • and some adjoining Crown Lands

The program is expected to take 8 to 10 days to complete, weather dependent.

The herbicide used is Metsulfuron methyl 600WG. NPWS staff will be present during the helicopter spray operation. Please ensure you follow the advice on all warning signs and the directions given by staff.

The following areas are closed:

  • Wreck Beach walk 
  • Tomaree Head

Heavy rain has undermined the walking track and caused significant damage to steps and landings. Barriers and signage are in place.

The following areas remain closed to visitors:

  • Tomaree Head
  • Wreck Beach walking track

Heavy rain has caused landslides that are blocking walking tracks, and the area is not safe for visitors. The area needs to be made safe, and extensive repairs and assessment are required before opening.

Closed areas: Fingal Island access trail and Point Stephens Lighthouse - closed to vehicles

The Fingal Island access trail and Point Stephens Lighthouse are closed to vehicles.

The sea conditions at the spit are variable, unpredictable and subject to change at short notice. People have drowned attempting to cross the Fingal Spit, and even at low tides the spit can be impacted by fast-moving water.

Closed areas: Ocean Rocks walking track

Ocean Rocks walking track in Tomaree National Park is closed due to landslide from Thursday 20 February 2020. Signs will be in place around the closed area.

All main visitor areas, including Tomaree Summit walk, will remain open. You can still access Tomaree Head via Tomaree Summit walk.

Closed areas: Worimi Conservation Lands northern access road closed for maintenance and upgrades

The Gan Gan entrance to the park will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians until 28 May 2021 due to planned maintenance and upgrade works.

Recent extreme weather and sea conditions have caused significant damage making access along the beachfront dangerous to 4WD vehicles.

Capital works include reconstructing the frontal dune and formalising an appropriate crossing onto the beach over the frontal dune for safer beach access .

Beach driving between the Gan Gan entrance and Lavis Lane beachfront will be closed in both directions from COB 12 May 2012 until 09:00AM Mon 17 May when it will be reviewed

Commercial tour operators will continue to operate in the Northern end of the park. Commercial activities and public access will continue to be allowed in the Recreational Vehicle Area via Lavis Lane.

Ganyamalbaa campground is open and is accessible from Lavis Lane.

Closed areas: Most of Myall Lakes National Park closed due to flood

Most areas in Myall Lakes National Park continue to be severely impacted by flooding. Flood waters entering the Myall Lake system have inundated campgrounds and roads.

Most campgrounds remain closed for an extended period. All roads west of the Pacific Highway remain closed, pending further assessment from NPWS.

Please avoid all waterways due to public health risk and navigational safety issues.

The following campgrounds are open:

  • Banksia Green
  • Stewart and Lloyds
  • Yagon

NPWS is progressively reopening parts of the park as it is safe to do so.
