You’ll get a healthy dose of history on this epic 55km alpine trek through Kosciuszko National Park. Starting from Guthega Power Station carpark, you’ll spend 4 days following winding paths and crossing rivers between the historic Kosciuszko huts.
The Heritage Hikes Australia guides will have plenty of tales to tell along the road thanks to their background in archaeology, history and biology. Hear the stories of stockmen, surveyors and the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme while learning hut etiquette.
The first two huts your small group will encounter are Horse Camp Hut and White River Hut. The first is a corrugated iron structure with a distinctive red door, built in the 1950s for surveyors. The second was built for shepherds in 1934, then used by ski tourers.
Next up is the larger 1961 Schlink Hut, followed by the bright red Valentines Hut. You’ll make a detour to Mawsons Hut between the two if weather allows, before returning to the ski village for a celebratory lunch and debrief. The exact route may vary depending on weather conditions and group ability.
Heritage Hikes Australia provides all meals, permits and safety equipment. You’ll need to bring your own pack, tent, clothing and personal gear suitable for this demanding hike. The team can set you up with hire gear and extra trek preparation if needed.
Heritage Hikes Australia is a licensed commercial tour operator with a Parks Eco Pass.
