Nadia Waters’ drawing exhibition, Birds of the Pilliga Scrub, focuses on the beauty of birds living in the Pilliga Scrub. This landscape is a combination of eastern and western climates, linking together the Warrumbungle National Park and Mount Kaputar National Park. It’s a monumental rewilding conservation area for valuable ecosystems, rich in biodiversity and rugged beauty.

The Pilliga Scrub is home to over 200 bird species. Each of Waters’ pieces was created using chalk on cardboard. They feature feathered friends of the region like the Grey Crowned Babbler, Barking Owl, Bush Stoned Curlew and Mallee fowls.

This environment supports nearly one-third of Australian parrot species. Many are depicted in this exhibition like the Turquoise Parrot, Swift Parrot and Superb Parrot. You’ll see both common and threatened species, acknowledging the diverse birdlife at home in the Pilliga Scrub.

The use of repurposed cardboard as a drawing surface demonstrates sustainability and beauty in the ordinary. Walters uses the gentle quality of chalk to emphasise the bird’s vulnerability in our fragile climate and their lightness in the air. This exhibition aims to inspire appreciation for environmental conservation, birds and our natural world.
