Closed areas: Parts of Blue Mountains National Park closed

Many walking tracks, roads and fire trails within Blue Mountains National Park remain closed following sustained wet weather causing subsidence hazards, major landslides or infrastructure upgrades. 

The following areas are closed:

Katoomba and Leura

  • Honeymoon Bridge is closed due to rockfall risk.
  • Fern Bower, Amphitheatre and Leura Forest Tracks are closed due to multiple landslides and damage.
  • Ruined Castle, Golden Stairs, Solitary Loop and Federal Pass west of Scenic World are closed due to multiple landslides.
  • Access to Mount Solitary from Kedumba Valley will remain temporarily closed until saftey works are complete. 
  • Lone Lyrebird track is closed between Gordon Road and the War Memorial, due to subsidence. Detour is in place.
  • Sections of Prince Henry Cliff walk (part of Grand Cliff Top Walk) is closed between Prince Henry picnic area and Scenic World from Tuesday 9 April to end of June 2024 for track maintenance. Follow detour on Cliff Drive. 
  • Bridal Veil View lookout and track (Leura) are closed from Wednesday 10 April for maintenance.
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk (part of Grand Cliff Top Walk) is closed between Gordon Falls picnic area and Elysian Rock lookout, due to a landslide. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk (part of Grand Cliff Top Walk) is closed between Fern Bower track and Echo Tree & Flat Rock lookout, due to a landslide. Please use Cliff Drive as short detour. 
  • Part of Lindeman Pass is closed due to a major landslide below Gladstone lookout. Roberts Pass is closed due to rockfall and landslide hazards.   
  • The six foot track is affected by multiple road closures.

Wentworth Falls and Woodford 

  • Part of Undercliff Track (part of Grand Cliff Top Walk) is closed betwen Princes Rock and Fletchers Lookout due to a landslide. 
  • Valley of the Waters track is closed below Sylvia Falls. There is no access to Roberts Pass, Vera Falls, Hippocrene Falls or Wentworth Falls from Valley of the Waters.
  • Charles Darwin walk (part of the Grand Cliff Top walk) is closed between Fletcher Street and Weeping Rock. Detours are in place to provide directions to Wentworth Falls Picnic Area. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Part of National Pass (west of Wentworth Falls middle crossing) is closed due to major landslide. 
  • Wentworth Pass and Slack Stairs are closed due to multiple landslides.
  • Kedumba Valley Road will be closed until 8th May 2024 for road repairs - open to pedestrians over weekends. Kedumba campground is closed until the 8th May 2024, including weekends.

Blackheath, Mount Victoria and Bells Line of Road

  • There is no vehicle access to Dunphy's Camping Area and Wild Dog Mountains track heads due to a major landslide on Megalong Road. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for road updates.

  • Williams Track (Govetts descent) and Rodriguez Pass are closed due to rockfalls and landslides. Entry is not permitted due to serious risk of injury or death.
  • Pulpit Rock Reserve, lookouts and walking track are closed. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information. Pulpit Rock walking track from Popes Glen is open as far as the NPWS boundary (as shown on Google maps).

Adventure Recreation, canyons, abseiling and rock climbing

  • Some adventure recreation areas and routes are specifically closed where the access or exit road/track is mentioned above.

Western section of park closed for ground pest control operation

The western section of Curracabundi National Park (Rockglen and Lea Hurst precincts) is closed 9am, Friday 19 January 2024 to 10am, Friday 31 May 2024 for periodical ground based pest control operations that will be conducted throughout this period. Closed parks: Ben Halls Gap Nature Reserve and National Park- Pest Control Works

Ben Halls National Park and Nature Reserve will be closed for ground pest control operation

The area will be closed from, Friday 2nd of February 2024 to 10am, until the 30th of June 2024 for periodical ground based pest control operations that will be conducted throughout this period. Safety alerts: Visitor Safety Alert: Feral Horses

Feral horses move through this campground day and night. Campers at Little Murray and Polblue campgrounds should set up tents as close to their vehicles as possible.

 

Aggressive horse behaviour can pose a safety risk for visitors. Aggressive behaviour includes snorting, head bobbing, stomping front legs, ears erect, aggressive stance and approaching in an aggressive manner.

 

What to do around aggressive horses:

· avoid the animals, especially if a stallion is present and there are mares nearby

· retreat to your vehicle

· wave your arms around and make lots of noise

· walk in a group rather than as an individual

· always be aware of your immediate surroundings.

Closed areas: Burraga Swamp Walk Closed

Burraga Swamp walking track is currently inaccessible to vehicles due to closure of Mt Allyn Rd. Forestry Corporation of NSW has closed the road due to a failed bridge. The reopening date is not known at this stage. For more information, phone Gloucester NPWS Office on 02 6538 5300.

Closed areas: Polblue Swamp Track partially closed for track maintenance

The southern section of Polblue Swamp Track will be closed from Monday 15 April to Friday 26 April while the walking track is being upgraded. Other sections of the track will remain open, however completing the loop circuit will not be possible during this period.

Closed areas: 4WD Trail Closures

Some 4WD trails remain closed after the annual seasonal closure period (from 1 June to 30 September) due to trail conditions. The following 4WD trails remain closed:

  • Tugalow trail
  • Thunderbolts trail - between Barrington Tops Forest Road and Pheasants Creek Road
  • Barrington Trail south past the Junction Pools Trail.

 

This closure does not effect public vehicle access to the Barrington Tops plateau campgrounds.

 

Walkers and mountain bikers are still permitted to utilise these trails while it is closed to public vehicles.

Closed areas: Phytophthora quarantine area - Barrington Tops National Park

Phytophthora is a mould that causes dieback in plants. It's been found on the plateau in Barrington Tops National Park, predominantly on the Watergauge trail between Beean Beean and Black Swamp. The affected area is under quarantine with absolutely no visitor access.

Phytophthora is readily spread by mud carried by walkers' shoes and mountain-bike tyres. There are boot wash stations across the plateau for walkers to use, to ensure their boots 'Start clean, Stay clean'.
