The following roads in this park are closed due to storm and flood damage:

Gates have been locked, and signs are in place on closed roads. Expected reopening times are subject to weather delays.

Closed areas: Parts of Blue Mountains National Park closed

Many walking tracks, roads and fire trails within Blue Mountains National Park remain closed following sustained wet weather causing subsidence hazards, major landslides or infrastructure upgrades. 

The following areas are closed:

Katoomba and Leura

  • Honeymoon Bridge is closed due to rockfall risk.
  • Fern Bower, Part of Amphitheatre and Leura Forest Tracks are closed due to multiple landslides and damage.
  • Ruined Castle, Golden Stairs, Solitary Loop and Federal Pass west of Scenic World are closed due to multiple landslides.
  • Access to Mount Solitary from Kedumba Valley will remain temporarily closed until saftey works are complete. 
  • Lone Lyrebird track is closed between Gordon Road and the War Memorial, due to subsidence. Detour is in place.
  • Sections of Prince Henry Cliff walk (part of Grand Cliff Top Walk) and Round Walk are closed between Prince Henry picnic area and Scenic World from Tuesday 9 April to end of June 2024 for track maintenance. Follow detour on Cliff Drive. Access to Furber Steps is from Prince Henry picnic area (Katoomba Falls Kiosk). Detours in place.
  • Bridal Veil View lookout and track (Leura) are closed from Wednesday 10 April for maintenance.
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk (part of Grand Cliff Top Walk) is closed between Gordon Falls picnic area and Elysian Rock lookout, due to a landslide. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk (part of Grand Cliff Top Walk) is closed between Fern Bower track and Echo Tree & Flat Rock lookout, due to a landslide. Please use Cliff Drive as short detour. 
  • Part of Lindeman Pass is closed due to a major landslide below Gladstone lookout. Roberts Pass is closed due to rockfall and landslide hazards.   
  • The six foot track is affected by multiple road closures.

Wentworth Falls and Woodford   

  • Valley of the Waters track is closed below Sylvia Falls. There is no access to Roberts Pass, Vera Falls, Hippocrene Falls or Wentworth Falls from Valley of the Waters.
  • Charles Darwin walk (part of the Grand Cliff Top walk) is closed between Fletcher Street and Weeping Rock. Detours are in place to provide directions to Wentworth Falls Picnic Area. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Part of National Pass (west of Wentworth Falls middle crossing) is closed due to major landslide. 
  • Wentworth Pass and Slack Stairs are closed due to multiple landslides.
  • Kedumba Valley Road will be closed until 8th May 2024 for road repairs - open to pedestrians over weekends. Kedumba campground is closed until the 8th May 2024, including weekends.

Blackheath, Mount Victoria and Bells Line of Road

  • Dunphy's Camping Area is closed due to traffic restrictions on Megalong Road. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for road updates.

  • Williams Track (Govetts descent) and Rodriguez Pass are closed due to rockfalls and landslides.
  • Pulpit Rock Reserve, lookouts and walking track are closed. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information. Pulpit Rock walking track from Popes Glen is open as far as the NPWS boundary (as shown on Google maps).

Adventure Recreation, canyons, abseiling and rock climbing

  • Some adventure recreation areas and routes are specifically closed where the access or exit road/track is mentioned above.

Closed areas: Parts of eastern Goulburn River National Park are closed for pest management operations

Parts of eastern Goulburn River National Park are closed for pest control operations. 

 

Death Adder Rock trail, Valances Arm trail, Bradleys trail and Horse Gully trail are closed from 6am Monday the 22nd of April until 5pm on the 10th of May for a ground pest control operation. Penalties apply for non-compliance. For more information, contact the Mudgee Office on 02 6370 9000.

Safety alerts: Visitor Safety Alert: Feral Horses

Feral horses move through this campground day and night. Campers at Little Murray and Polblue campgrounds should set up tents as close to their vehicles as possible.

 

Aggressive horse behaviour can pose a safety risk for visitors. Aggressive behaviour includes snorting, head bobbing, stomping front legs, ears erect, aggressive stance and approaching in an aggressive manner.

 

What to do around aggressive horses:

· avoid the animals, especially if a stallion is present and there are mares nearby

· retreat to your vehicle

· wave your arms around and make lots of noise

· walk in a group rather than as an individual

· always be aware of your immediate surroundings.

The southern section of Polblue Swamp Track will be closed from Monday 15 April to Friday 26 April while the walking track is being upgraded. Other sections of the track will remain open, however completing the loop circuit will not be possible during this period.

Safety alerts: Major Roadworks in Jilliby State Conservation Area - Commencing 27 December 2023

Major roadworks are scheduled to commence from Wednesday 27th December 2023 in Jilliby State Conservation Area (Southern Precinct) and part of Ourimbah State Forest.

Partial and intermittent road closures should be expected. The roads that will be affected are:

  • Red Hill Road
  • Prestons Ridge Road
  • Bradleys Point Road
  • Campbells Point Road and 
  • Tooheys Road.

 

Visitors are asked to avoid the area (if possible). Otherwise, please be aware of trucks and machinery using and working on the above roads and to drive to the conditions. Warning signs and traffic control will be in place. Work is expected to be completed by June 2024. The work is funded as part of the Fire Access and Fire Trail (FAFT) program aimed at providing safe and strategic fire trails for fire response and access.

Bangalow Campground, Gap Creek Campground and Gap Creek Picnic Area BBQs are currently out of order. Repairs to these facilities will take place June 2024.  Campers and day visitors are encouraged to bring their own gas stoves during this time.

Closed areas: 4WD Trail Closures

Some 4WD trails remain closed after the annual seasonal closure period (from 1 June to 30 September) due to trail conditions. The following 4WD trails remain closed:

  • Tugalow trail
  • Thunderbolts trail - between Barrington Tops Forest Road and Pheasants Creek Road
  • Barrington Trail south past the Junction Pools Trail.

 

This closure does not effect public vehicle access to the Barrington Tops plateau campgrounds.

 

Walkers and mountain bikers are still permitted to utilise these trails while it is closed to public vehicles.

Safety alerts: Watagans National Park part closure for pest control shoot operation

Parts of Watagans National Park will be closed between 1700 (5pm) Monday 11th March 2024 to 0500 (5am) 26th April 2024 for wild dog and fox control ground shoot operations. These operations aim to prevent localised economic impacts and protect Brush-tailed rock-wallabies within the park. 

When active, the shoot operation area will be delineated by signage advising visitors "do not enter" during the night-time operation.

Georges Road in the Watagans NP is temporarily closed from The Narrow Pass Lookout west to the National Park boundary due to extensive road damage. Visitors are reminded to drive to the conditions along Georges Road to the Lookout and not drive past this point. NPWS plans to upgrade this trail ASAP in the new year. The Climbers Walking Track between Gap Creek Camping Area and Bangalow Camping Area is closed due to the recent wildfire. Timber steps and walking track edges have been lost and the track surface is now unstable. It will take some time to repair and make safe. Visitors are asked not to use the track for their own safety. The nearby Gap Creek Waterfall track is open and available to visitors. Safety alerts: Watagan Road/Heaton Road closed due to landslips

Watagan Road (also known as Heaton Road) is closed until further notice due to a major landslip on the Cessnock City Council section.

There is no access from the cattle grid at the southern end of Heaton Road, Quorrobolong south, uphill to the Georges Road intersection in the Watagans NP.

This access road to Olney, Heaton State Forests and Watagans National Park is closed.

Work is currently underway way but will be complex, involve geotechnical planning, major earthworks and road realignment.

There is no vehicle access across Little Jilliby jilliby Creek in either direction. Locked gates are in place in several locations.

Muirs Lookout Picnic Area on Prickly Ridge Road has been closed due to ageing infrastructure, obstructed lookout views to the coast and very low public visitation. Alternative picnic facilities are located nearby in Olney State Forest and Watagans National Park. Closed areas: Phytophthora quarantine area - Barrington Tops National Park

Phytophthora is a mould that causes dieback in plants. It's been found on the plateau in Barrington Tops National Park, predominantly on the Watergauge trail between Beean Beean and Black Swamp. The affected area is under quarantine with absolutely no visitor access.

Phytophthora is readily spread by mud carried by walkers' shoes and mountain-bike tyres. There are boot wash stations across the plateau for walkers to use, to ensure their boots 'Start clean, Stay clean'.
