1080 fox baits (sodium fluoroacetate) will be laid in various locations across Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and Garigal National Park from Thursday 1 February 2018 to Tuesday 31 July 2018.  The baited areas will contain buried baits or ejector capsules. Do not touch the baits or ejector devices as they are poisonous. 1080 is highly lethal to domestic animals and pet owners are reminded that dogs are not permitted in national parks.

Closed areas: Closure of unathorised track near Ryland trail

NPWS will be closing and rehabilitating a section of an unauthorised track near Par 3 golf course in Terrey Hills. The track runs through an important Saving Our Species site, adjacent to Ryland trail in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park.

The unauthorised track runs through very important habitat for the critically endangered greville caylei and Duffys Forest Endangered Ecological Community. As such, NPWS will be working to protect these and other species and asks the public to please avoid using the area.

Some areas of the park in the Duffys Forest/Terrey Hills section are closed due to the Cowan hazard reduction burn from 3pm on Friday 20 April 2018 until further notice. This closure may be extended and any extension will be posted as soon as possible. The closed areas are:

  • Cowan trail
  • Cullamine trail
  • Long trail
  • Slades trail
  • Duffys Wharf track
  • Sections of the Perimeter trail

Detours will be in place for some walking tracks within Berowra National Park on Saturday 21 April 2018 due to a hazard reduction burn. The areas affected include:

  • Between Joalah fire trail and Berkeley trail
  • Great North Walk between Berkeley trail and the Berowra Community Centre on Crowley Road, Berowra 

For walkers heading north:

  • Detour via Lyrebird Gully to Mount Kuringai Station (travel by train) and rejoin the walk at Cowan Station

For walkers heading south:

  • Catch the train from Cowan to Mount Kuringai Station and rejoin the Great North Walk at Glenview Road entrance, Mount Kuringai

The walking tracks from Cowan to Berowra Waters will be open.

Caylei trail is closed due to a planned hazard reduction burn in Garigal National Park.

The Caylei hazard reduction burn is scheduled to start on Saturday 21 April 2018 at 7am. Sections of Garigal east will be closed until further notice.

The Sphinx carpark will be closing at the earlier time of 4pm from Saturday 14 April to Tuesday 24 April 2018 (inclusive). Visitors will need to remove their vehicles from the area before 4pm. An emergency contact number is displayed on-site for after-hours assistance.

There will be no vehicle access to the Sphinx carpark or Sphinx Memorial after the carpark closing time.

Closed areas: Hazard reduction burning operation

A hazard reduction burn will take place on Wednesday 11 April 2018 to Friday 13 April 2018 in the Bloodwood Road and Marramarra Creek areas of Marramarra National Park. The entire affected area will be closed during the operation while the burn is completed and for approximately two weeks following the burn until the area is assessed as safe. The affected areas include:

  • Smugglers Ridge trail and walking track;
  • Marramarra Ridge and Marramarra Creek trails
  • Coba Ridge trail and walking tracks
  • Marramarra Creek campgrounds

Safety alerts: Restricted access on Quarry trail and Benowie walking track

Please be aware that access restrictions and track closures are in place along trails that cross land managed by Hornsby Rifle Range as a Range Danger Area. The Hornsby Rifle Range Danger Area is closed to the public. Closures include:

  • An 800 metre section of the Quarry fire trail, between Quarry Road, Dural and Tunks Ridge campground
  • An 800 metre section of Quarry fire trail, 300 metres in from the Stewart Avenue entrance at Hornsby
  • The section of track between Steele Bridge and Fishponds Waterholes (please use the Great North Walk detour through Hornsby Heights or access to Quarry Road, Dural is via Pogsons Link walking track)

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service will be running a 1080 wild dog baiting program in Brisbane Water National Park. The baiting will begin on Wednesday 21 March 2018 and finish by Saturday 21 April 2018.

This program is part of a broader coordinated control program to lessen the impacts of wild dogs on stock and wildlife. If you'd like to become involved in the cooperative program, please contact the Greater Sydney Local Land Services on (02) 4355 8203.

Domestic pets (including dogs) are not permitted in national parks or reserves. Neighbours and park users are reminded that 1080 baits are lethal to domestic pets. There will be 1080 baiting signs at access points to the baiting areas. In the event of accidental poisoning, seek immediate veterinary assistance.

We suggest that working dogs be restrained to ensure that they don't enter the baiting location during poisoning operations, or muzzle dogs if they're required to work in the baiting location during and after the baiting program.

Closed areas: Flat Rock track - partial closure

A section of Flat Rock track - from the Killarney Drive entrance to the Downpatrick Street entrance - is currently closed until further notice due to track safety issues where the track passes through private property near Killarney Point:

  • Walkers heading west should exit Flat Rock track at the eastern end of Killarney Drive and use Killarney Drive until you reach Downpatrick Street. Then walk down the street and re-enter Flat Rock track from the Downpatrick Street fire trail.
  • Walkers heading east should exit Flat Rock track at the Downpatrick Street fire trail and use Downpatrick Street, then Killarney Drive until you reach the end of Killarney Drive. Re-enter Flat Rock track from the Killarney Drive entrance.

From Monday 7 December 2015, some toilets within this park will be closed during the week, opening only on weekends and public holidays. Toilets affected are:

  • Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park is open sunrise to sunset but may have to close at times due to poor weather or fire danger.

    • The entrance to Bobbin Head and Appletree Bay is closed from 8pm to 6am during daylight savings periods, and from 5.30pm to 6am at other times of the year.
    • Gates to West Head are closed from 8.30pm to 6am during daylight savings periods, and from 6pm to 6am at other times of the year.
    • No vehicle access to The Basin campground or to Barrenjoey Headland

    $12 per vehicle per day. Bus: $4.40 per adult, $2.20 per child (per day). There is no daily entry fee for teachers/educational supervisors (1 adult per 10 children).
